N Frame and Small Hands

Thread started 1/8/2010.

He may have come up with something in the interim.

The N frame is at the end of my limit on size, and the Hogue grips that came with my 629-5 did not let me shoot double action. I can not consider a Tyler T Grip because of the aggressive recoil of the 629-5 so I settled on a set of Pachmayer Decelerators. They are thin and give me the ability to shoot double action, and have a little extra padding to absorb recoil.

More T Grips with that damned hump near the bottom! Why do they put that there? My finger wants to be right where the point is and I can't stand it. I know I have seen pictures of T Grips that are smooth. Are they still available this way?

The "swell" on some T-grips is for retention purposes. It makes it harder for the gun to be pulled from your grasp. Smooth T-grips are out there as well. Your choice. They don't please everyone.

Welcome to the forum.

The magna style grips put my hand too far away to have a good pull on the trigger. I use a tyler T on several guns that I have with the magna grips. I like them a lot. Recently I ordered the Ahrends retro target stocks. These stocks are thinner than the S&W targets and also work well with those of us that have small hands (or in my case, medium size hands with short stubby fingers).

That's exactly right about the magnas. I have stubby digits, too (I dunno what size gloves I wear, but a pair of medium White Mule work gloves fit me.....like a glove[emoji47])

I assume DA shooting is your problem? Whatever you do, don't mess with those original grips!

Hogues are pretty thin. I don't care for finger grooves. I know you can get their wood grips sans fgs, I dunno about the neoprene ones. I still don't like the location of their Palm swells. But the good thing is, the neoprene grips are cheap enough you can grind/sand them to the shape you like without fear. You also don't have to worry about thinning them too much and causing a crack.

Remember for DA shooting you want something rounded and that tapers in the opposite direction as factory targets. The factory stocks flare out towards the butt, so your shortest fingers are gripping the widest part.

Hey guys, all good gouge. My wife has tremendously small hands. About 2 years ago, she picked up my 28-2 with Miculek grips and a Mag-Na-Port Combat Trigger mod. The grips helped, but the trigger and its radiused and polished face made all the difference.

My counsel would be to have Pat Grashorn make a set of his Elk Stag Magnas grips ( I like the slightly marbled type over barked) in a thin thickness. He did a set for me years ago. If I recall, they were 3/8 inch thick. With a Tyler T-grip they felt great and with a radiused trigger, even better.

There's options for you. Round Butting is good, but very expensive (with refinishing, etc.).

Kim Ahrends retro target or retro combat, both made thin; many with smaller hands really like them.
I have large hands with fat fingers but I like them also.

Type in "Ahrends" on ebay and look for "gripseller". Good people.

It's an old thread, but you never know who will stumble across it looking for info on grips. With that in mind, I have size "9" hands and love the oil-finished maple Ahrends Retro Targets on my k-frame. Nevertheless, I also have a set of Retro Combats on the way because the targets aren't well-suited for concealed carry. The square edge on the bottom digs into my ribs and prints relatively easily. The RCs and Targets are essentially the same size. For what it's worth, the Targets on my k-frame are basically the same width front-to-back and side-to-side as the Hogue Monogrips on my n-frame... and I have no trouble reaching the wide trigger.

Herrett Target grips may be worth a try. The best thing you could do is to handle before you purchase. (tough) I have 3 sets. My 28 no dash wears them. Feel good to me! Bob

It's all in the grips. Yes that is a 629.
