N frame holster

I came across this holster online and am curious about. It looks like it's a belt holster, but I'm not sure an 8 3/8" n frame is practical on the belt. I guess it could have been used on harness, but I'm not sure.

It has been personalized, but doesnt seem to have a makers mark on it.

So, my questions are: Is this practical as a belt holster? Does anyone recognize the maker/style?

Looks like it would be better as a cross draw. I wonder if a good harness like offered by Simply Rugged might make it a good chest holster? I have always found long toms to carry awkwardly on the belt.

That appears to be a Pancake holster in the style of Roy Baker. Not sure if it is his work or someone’s copy. A photo of the back would help.

My vote is that holster is a copy of a Roy Baker Pancake. More belt slots than I remember on a Baker.

Found this one for a 6.5" redhawk. Its marked "Roy's Leather".

The stitching is different on the N Frame holster, so I guessing it is a copy. I was considering it for my 629, but I think I'll be better off getting a harness holster for it.

Yes indeed it is entirely a belt holster, no harness was on offer from original designer Baker.. Were you to buy it no one will watch to make sure you wear it on the slots nearest the muzzle! Instead wear it by the uppermost slots as a normal pancake .

Here's how Roy envisioned us wearing that configuration: on not just a 'good gunbelt' which is a myth, but on a very wide 'true' gunbelt that is a lined outdoorsman design including the River and Sam Browne belts; this is 1976:



Notice that the vertical position is identical to just . . . wearing it on the model's trousers belt. Idiots. Roy's belts, which he patterned after Andy Anderson because Roy was his disciple, were stated t/b 2" wide.

To understand any of this one would need to be a Child of the Seventies: jeans belt loops were wide enough for a 2-1/4" Sam Browne belt (I wore one in mine).

I used a eight and three eighths inch barreled .41 Magnum
and a belt holster in a couple of action pistol matches
years ago. Worked OK for me.

Only recall one sort of slower than expected draw in one match.

Still, not a bad holster.
