N Frame Serial # question

I just purchased a model 28-2 with 4in bbl recently. The price was on the upper end of what I deemed reasonable...$600. The gun is in near new condition. The main factor that swayed me in its purchase was a low serial #, (N675x). Is that a viable reason for purchase? Do low serial #'s make a premium in value on later model guns? How many N Frames have been made since the switch from a "S" prefix to the "N" prefix. My other 28-2 4" is a "S32131x". How far apart in production are they?

S321=1968-69 N675=1980

The N prefix started in 1969, and your model 28-2 was probably shipped no more than a year or two before this. In equal condition an S prefix gun will be more valuable than an N prefix gun; this is not entirely rational for guns that are the same and may be only a few years apart in age, but there you have it.

S321=1968-69 N675=1980

The N prefix gun is only 4 digits according to the OP, so that puts it in the '69-'72 time frame. The S321 serial gun would have been serialized '69, so it is possible that they are both from '69. The M28 wasn't as popular back then as it is now, so they both might have sat in inventory for a while before being shipped. Only a letter will tell the actual ship dates.
