Does anyone know if a square butt N frame can be modified to a round butt? The pistol had a rough life and seen better days so no collector value will be lost. Also looking for a pattern to follow so does anyone have a rough/cheap set of round butt grips for sale? Thanks for your time and love the forum. Ed J. in KS

Sure, they been cutting the frames for years.

I'd sell the SQ butt off personally, some people (like me) prefer SQ butts. Then you could buy another gun more to your liking, and have $$ in your pocket for ammo.

BEFORE ordering a jig (which may not be necessary at all, but probably is a great convenience), check to see whether you will lose any of the serial number. If so, contact the ATF before cutting; they will advise you on proper procedures. You CAN still do it, but it may end up being more bother than you want to put up with.

Your original idea of using round butt grips as the guide is fine.

Just out of curiosity, what model N-frame is it?

I dislike the N-frame round butt configuration. I owned a 25-5 that someone had converted, and I also have a model 25 Mountain Gun. With the round butts, I need a much larger grip to handle the gun, and when I bring it onto target the larger grips consistently cause the guns to be aimed slightly to the right. With square butts, and a nice frame-following grip, the extra grip at the bottom rear of the butt fills my hand and keeps my fingers from rubbing on the trigger guard while still maintaining a high hold on the grip. That is what I dislike most about round butt grips. The ones that are large enough to feel decent push your grip down below the trigger guard.

That being said, the round-butt conversion had been done fairly well on the 25-5 I had. Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the replies, gives me some ideas and experiences to consider.I think for now I will leave it alone and try the feel of a round butt before I modify mine, It's a 29-2 frame and had been carried/neglected but the mechanics are still in good shape so a good canidate for refinish. Thanks again and all have a good week and holiday.
