So my daughter and I went to the range today to have some fun with our S&W's. We took them all: 15-22, Sport, and M&P40. Had fun for a couple of hours even if we had to dodge a few brief rain storms.

That's awesome! I took my daughter to the local indoor range today. She fired off 150 rounds of .22 and had a great time. It was the first time she fired the 15-22 and after the first shot she turned her head to me and giggled. I've never been so proud :D

What a great way to spend some quality time and she'll remember those times forever........:)

what minimum age do you guys think kids are old enough (and mature enough) to take to the range? my oldest just turned 5...i know thats still a little young, but honestly i can't wait to take her.

I started my kids (and now my grandkids) shooting between five and six. It depends upon when THEY are interested in shooting. The key is proper and constant supervision at all times.

Personally, the best firearm to start youngsters on is a Cricket single shot. $99 just about anyplace that sells them. It is sized for kids and is a very accurate little rifle.

I would say it depends on each individual child. I know some kids age 12-13 that I wouldn't trust a BB gun with much less a firearm. I would start them off with BB guns or pellet guns until they get the basics of safety engrained in them.

A cheap BB gun runs around $20 and they can break it without you worrying about it breaking the bank!

I started mine out on a Daisy Buck BB gun last year when he was 4. At the beginning of last spring I was a little uncertain, but after I made him memorize the all the safety procedures from start to finish including calling out range commands where applicable he seems to have taken to it like a duck to water. This year now 5 we have moved to the .22 and I chose the M&P because of the light weight and short stock. We have had a blast! we shoot between the 25 and 50 yard ranges and he is now on 6" targets at 50 yards with open sights & with red dot.

My advice is to never let your guard down and don't over do it with them. If they happen to get board after 3 mags that day don't push them call it a day and go do something else that they want to do.

I like this idea and plan on doing this with mine! Starting off with BB guns and pellet guns and then when I feel that they are comfortable, moving to the .22.

I just took mine for the first time and let them have at it with the 15-22. My son is 8 and my daughter is 10. The range I go to is pretty family orientated and I usually see dads with their kids everytime I go. Some look younger than mine. If they can safely handle it with your assistance, then you should be gtg.

I started mine pretty early as you can see..... :D
