Wow what am I going to do? That is not a fair statement, cause I'm not a b-ball fan. However lots of folks are going to go wonkie. Lots of $$ impact here too. Don't care about the players but the area business that get a piece of the fans $$ are going to feel a pinch.

All sporting events with 1,000 plus attendees will be cancelled. In addition to the NCAAB and the NBA, soon to follow will be the Olympics, the NHL, MLB, NASCAR, PGA, you name it. Fact.

More significantly, all travel from Europe to the US is suspended for a month beginning Friday. Apparently accommodations can be made for US citizens.

I looked into this more and discovered that the UK is exempt from these restrictions. I find that surprising.

He explicitly announced that. Far be it from me to question anyone’s motives, but the UK has as much of an exposure to the virus as the rest of Europe, and at least according to the BBC percentage-wise more cases of Covid-19 than the US population, so one could suspect politics are in play ... ;)
 
LVSteve, I agree.

From what I have read, for what it’s worth, I don’t think the travel suspension makes sense for health reasons. (The spread of the virus cannot be stopped, but it can be slowed by social distancing and good hygiene practices. Slowed is good, because it gives our health providers time to care for us within their capacity to do so.) And the UK is as at risk as the rest of Europe.... as are we all....

It is a time for unity of purpose, unity for the common good, our health, globally.

Two days before, he jokingly touched all the press mics. He got the game canceled and possibly the NBA season. Was he contagious then? How many people did he expose? What an idiot!!!

I like some sports better than others but my life would be no less full if I never caught another game. People are passionate about different things but I'm not about to knock anything that gets a man out of the house or otherwise pleasantly distracted for a few hours.
No play, no pay? Hope the players have invested wisely.
NHL, baseball, NFL draft perhaps more as spring and summer (Olympics?) approaches.
 
COVID-19 affecting the NBA

My wife and I had tickets to the Jazz-Thunder game last night in the city. The players were introduced and then the refs had a conference. Tip off was scheduled for 7:10 p.m. It was after 7:30 p.m. when it was announced the game had been postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The fans were ushered out of the arena. My wife and I were disappointed because this was our first Thunder game.

It wasn’t until I saw the news that I learned why the game was cancelled. One of the Jazz players had tested positive for the COVID-19. I then learned that the NBA has suspended its season.

Each Thunder home game provides $1.5 million in economic impact. That’s more than $16 million in commerce now at risk for the remaining season as the NBA shudders it doors.

Looks like college basketball is affected too. Heard on the news that the tournaments will be played to an empty house.
This virus is gonna have a nasty effect on our economy.

MLB will be making decisions tomorrow concerning the season. We have tickets for a spring training game in Phoenix next Wednesday with our son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters. Depending on what happens tomorrow, we might not make it to Phoenix, but will still probably still visit them in Sierra Vista.

And regarding the NCAA and March Madness? The real Madness will be if the tournament is actually allowed to take place.

Truth be known, though, there probably are people who believe accolades for coaches and colleges, trophies in display cases, and after-tournament parties and beer bashes are more important than the health and well being of students, athletes, their families, and other tournament attendees.

The economic impact of these cancelled sporting events far exceeds ticket costs. Vendors lose money, security people, parking attendants, local pubs and restaurants, bus and limo companies. It cascades down. People with less money to spend affect everyone.
 
I wish the NBA would have made this decision a day sooner, the Utah Jazz came to Oklahoma City last night to play the Thunder and brought the virus here and we had no one infected previously. They said right after the National Anthem played the Jazz got the medical report from Salt Lake City that one of their players tested positive for the Coronavirus so the game was canceled and everyone was told to leave. Another case of being a little too late to respond.

MLB Spring Training cancelled, opening day pushed back at least two weeks. Not going to Phoenix after all. I guess that we will just have to enjoy the granddaughters without the benefit of baseball.
