Been watching this one since it started. The basis is the backstory of Jethro Gibbs, the main character of NCIS, in his first job as a NIS "probie" in 1991. Building the backstory fills the first few episodes.

Now they have expanded on the other characters, especially his first boss, Mike Franks. Last night was called "Monsoons" and looked into Mike Franks and his past as a Vietnam vet. It was a very touching story about the problems Vietnam vets had reintegrating after their return. Soundtrack was "Whiter Shade of Pale", which played many times during the show. The telling piece was one vet who suffered from blackouts and PTSD, who said "They train you to kill. How come they don't untrain you when you come back?"

I so understood what so many of my Vietnam contemporaries went through, and still are going through. Maybe the best tv written about returned vets in the 50+ years since they started coming home.

I also have been watching "Origins" since it debuted. It is quite dark compared to the other series shows but that has helped set it apart. It is starting to get its stride and I like that they are starting to flesh out the other characters. One of the things I liked about the original series was the building of the back stories of all the characters.

I do have one gripe. The "big secret" that Gibbs sniped his family's killer in Mexico has to be one of the worst kept secrets within the entire Navy. He told just about everybody and everybody else just figured it out.

I will admit that I have been a big fan of the original NCIS since its beginning. I have the entire original series (up to date) on DVD's that I binge watch periodically. I was not much of a fan for spinoff shows however.

Yes, I too am a huge fan. The secret isn't much of one. I guess they had to show it in detail because they thought many viewers wouldn't have been watching it for years and years (even though it's on constant rotation on at least three or more cable channels...)

I’ve been a fan of the original NCIS since day one and always looked forward to the night it came on. One of my favorite programs. I’ve watched the NCIS Origins since it premiered and felt the emphasis on Franks was a little heavy and in your face. This weeks show was a good one showing Mike Franks flashbacks and the effects of the war in Vietnam.
I am hooked on Origins now.

I've only seen a few seasons. Thought it was great. Very strong characters. Great plots. Good TV.

NCIS was ruined when they had Gibbs lose all self control and beat the hell out of that dog fighter, no matter how much I feel the same way. I am enjoying "Origins" and my wife seems to also, which is a positive as she sort of tolerated the original.

My wife and I like the show which probably doesn't bode well for it's future. Eclectic bunch of characters with Gibb's about the least interesting of the bunch which means the general audience will be confused and most likely tune out. Kind of fun watching how Gibb's has yet to develop his skills as evidenced by him left cussing in the scrub after losing the foot chase.

I watched NCIS and NCIS-NO for the man characters. Must could not get into all the others, Origins included. Guess I'm just burnt out on the series.

My work schedule kept me from watching the original in real time, I had to play catchup with repeats. With that out of the way..............

In at least one of the flash back things in the original, it seemed that Gibbs got at least some of his rules from his first wife. Although obviously, Franks was a big influence. Don't see any evidence of that so far in Origins.

And, it's a minor continuity thing, but in the "O", Franks and Gibbs were about the same size. Not so in Origins.

The New Orleans thing wasn't/isn't bad but I'm not much of a fan. As for the "lets have (insert name of Federal Agency) somewhere overseas" products....I just don't see those various nations letting our folks run rampant through their countries. Getting invited along as a strap hanger whilst the host country does the work, maybe.

In, I believe, the second episode, Gibbs can no longer stand to live in the house. He moves out and gets an apartment, with the fat lady who's got cancer. He tells her about killing Pedro, and he gets her back together with her son and she spends her last Christmas with her son before she dies.

But before he moved out of the house he got that box of rules out of the closet and took them outside and put them in the trash.

Before he went back to Pennsylvania, his daddy (sheriff Longmire) got the box out of the garbage can and put it in his truck and took it home with him. Somewhere along the line he is going to give it back to Gibbs, because it's the same box of rules that we see Gibbs open two or three times during the original series. When he takes the rule about not trusting lawyers, turns it over and writes SOMETIMES YOU'RE WRONG, and when he burns rule 10. It's the same box.

Add me to the list of people who really enjoyed the original series…. up until the final couple of years. At that point I felt like they were just phoning it it. Once Mark Harmon left I thought the show really went downhill. I had no plans to watch Origins as I thought it would be another ****** spinoff. I didn’t know that Mark Harmon was behind / involved in the project. I just happend to see the “Blue Bayou” episode and I was hooked. I’m caught up with the series and I have to admit that I love it. It is dark….. but its done in the right way. They are actually taking the time to develop characters and I’m just in love with this show. I hope they can keep it up.

On a side note, I think they nailed it with the guy playing Mike Franks.

Alpo, forgot those little bits. The voice over Gibbs seems (to me) to spend a lot of time philosophizing on Frank's rules.

This is gonna date me, but the blonde in the commercials sold a lot of English Leather.

YouTube resolved its differences with CBS et al.

Funny thing about NCIS is that when I briefly worked there I never met Ducky and happily never met Abby. Same for DiNozzo - I actually stopped watching for a while because he was such an annoyance.

I like the new folks. They have good chemistry even if I never met a foresics computer nerd hiding in the basement.......

My problem with all of the NCIS shows is they are all of one formula, hotshot leader, computer nerd, and a good team of cops. What I like about "Origins" is they have to write around the fact that there are no cell phones. I love that!

Don't get me wrong - I never miss an episode, Hawaii, DC, Origins, Sidney, and I miss New Orleans. :D

Except LA - I never watched that one; didn't like it as well as the others.
