Mack the Knife - Bobby Darrin - Origins

A little drift here, but I had always thought of Bobby Darin as pretty much a dime a dozen teenage heartthrob. Ok, except for Mack the Knife. But I had forgotten this beautiful song of his:

Love this beautiful song, Mack the Knife?? you can have my helping....

Especially with the worlds thugs doing horrible things with blades in the name of ,,, well the SCUM who murdered those two beautiful young ladies recently, will no doubt rot in hell!

My then girl friend and I watched Louis Armstrong playing his 'set' in a Las Vegas Hotel/Casino lounge on our high school graduation night on late May, 1957. We were drinking cokes and setting about 10 feet from him. Louie sang and played on his trumpet "Mack The Knife". My girl friend got into the song so much that he sang the song to her. Later I bought the 45 rpm record of his recording for her. I don't remember what was on the other side of the record. It wasn't long after that night that Louie moved into the "Big Showroom".

It was a long tradition in the Las Vegas Strip clubs that entertainers started in the lounges and after developing a following just might be invited to perform on the big stage.

Just for the record, when I said "beautiful song" I was referring to "If I Were a Carpenter".

Back to "Mack the Knife", I don't think the song or play is trying to glorify murder. It is about the evils of capitalism. Not that we have to agree with it, but that's what it's about.

I do note that when the NAZIs came to power, Brecht fled Germany, ultimately winding up in the USA!
