Hi, all - new to this site. I have a Model 5904 that I bought new around 1989, and I'd like to get a nice CCW holster for it. Before I order online, I need to know the frame size and get some recommendations on what to get and from whom. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I carried it on patrol for a couple years. I carried it concealed for a couple tries. It's a full size frame, and it does not rest well on you for a CCW. I have lugged mine around since 1991, and it is a wonderful pistol. It saved my life, 2 times. I had a belt clip holster that held it and allowed quick draw. But the gun did not like to stay put if you were an active walker, and running was out of the question. When I was on duty, it was on a chest/ underarm holster, and that was sometimes under a jacket. It was tolerable there, and I would say that was the only place I ever concealed it that was acceptable. I now have a good nylon holster from RedHead- Bass Pro shops. Medium/ large frame size pistol. It's not a concealed carry unit, but it fits a standard belt and works very well.

I think most holster makers will simply list it as 5900 series or by the most common variant, 5906. If your gun has the square trigger guard you also have to be very careful about that.
Lots of holsters will work, what works for you is obviously a very personal thing. I prefer OWB holsters, and simply won't use an IWB. Others will say the complete opposite.
I used to use this belt clip holster, custom made by a local Phoenix guy:
Now I use a similar holster he made that added a belt loop (sorry no pic). It's a little more stable, and holds the gun tighter, not that the other one was loose.
You may have to try a couple different things to find what works for you.

Almost all makers of holsters will an offering for a 5900 series S&W. I would probably make a few decisions as to what features you do and don't want, what materials you want it made of, thumb strap or not, OWB or IWB, etc.
Most of my herd rides in Kramer #3 IWB or Milt Sparks VM-2's...they are NOT a cheap holster by any means.
A 5906-5904 is not a lightweight gun so make sure that you are using a very sturdy belt. If you can fold it in half vertically it is not up to the job.
Another great solution for many on this forum is to call Ray (lobogunleather.com) and have him make what you want. Great product, with great pricing, and a fabulous man to deal with.
