Ok guys, so I pretty much decided on the scope I want, NCStar Ill Compact Tactical 3-9x42:

Amazon.com: NcStar SEECR3942R Illuminated Red / Green Rifle Scope: Sports & Outdoors

I really like this one, especially cuz of the options it has at that price, but if anyone knows where I can get it cheaper, even better. Now I know everyone's gonna say "well it depends on what you want to use your rifle for". Well I'm shooting indoors @ 25 yards right now, but I do want to go varmint hunting, I guess it'll be in open fields with lots of sun and not in the woods, I'm thinking Central California. So what I want to know, is what reticle is best or what are the differences between the P4, Mil-Dot, and Rangefinder. And also, since I will mostly be outdoors, do I really need an illuminated reticle? I ask because I can get a similar scope to the one I want for like $30 less. And why do they offer red and red/green reticle? Is green easier to see on a reticle just like a green laser is easier to see?

Also the mounting options, would it be better to mount the scope as close to the barrel as possible? I see people buying the AR carry handle and placing the scope on top of it. What are the pros/cons to that? I was planning on keeping the stock iron sights or maybe buying some knock off Magpul PTS. Would I need a riser for the scope?

Thanks in advance guys.

Range finder scopes are usually full caliber, not .22LR which has a vastly different trajectory than 5.56mm. They work off the height of a known object like from a man's belt to the top of his helmet, not a prairie dog.

Good scopes are much more expensive than these PRC scopes.

Scopes like this need to be zeroed for a specific, known range and seldom work well at intermediate or longer distances due to the height of the trajectory.

Mounting consists of putting on the rail, couldn't be simplier.
