Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and newly returned to shooting after 15 years. I have an S&W model 36 j frame and am interested in what are the best pocket and IWB holsters for that gun. Thank you in advance for your help !

I'll second the suggestion on the Mika pocket holster. I have two, one for a J frame and another for a Colt Agent and they are terrific. You should see what Ray Cory has at Lobo Gunleather. He does first class work. I have at least 5 of his holsters and have been very pleased with all his work.

I carry a 642 and I use both a Galco - Front Pocket Horsehide Holster and a DeSantis - Cozy Partner. The Galco fits into just about all of my inner breast or outter side jacket pockets for cold weather and the DeSantis is for IWB warm weather carry.

BTW, does anyone use any kind of a "Day Planner" type holster? ...just wondering if they are any good.

I have in the past - used to make my own before companies started doing it for us. Danger with off-body carry is that you'll leave the thing somewhere. A female Albuquerque Police officer made the five-o'-clock news doing just that a few years back. Not worth the risk, IMHO.

Thanks Erich and bubbiesdad! Leaving it behind somewhere is something I never even thought of. I agree, not worth the risk.

I was more concerned with getting the gun out in time should something happen. I have a regular day planner for work and you have to completely unzip it just to a business card out.

Another downside there, Jack, as you note: the ones I've seen have sacrificed draw speed for security (probably the way to go, really, but - again - a downside). Hey, welcome to the forums, by the way. :)

Another vote for Mika Pocket Holsters. I don't know how many I have, a lot, but have used other's and Mika's are the Holsters I like the best. Each one is hand made by Robert Mika specifically for the gun to be carried in them so they fit like a good Holster should.

I just got off the phone with Bob Mika and learned he's retireing from Law Enforcement after 32 years and will be concentrating full time on his Holster business.......

Bell Charter Oak

I just received an IWB "Chicago Rocker" and pocket "Gaylord 8 Ball" for my S&W 442. Very good quality and good customer service. Lefty Lewis was a great help. TJ

Thanks for the welcome! I've been here a short time but have already found lots of good info on this forum.

High Noon Holsters Mr. Softy for IWB and Remora Pocket holster for IWB or cargo pocket in the summer. Both are excellent i own about 3 of each variations

I have a Bianchi Waistband Holster, Model# 10382 (RH) Suede from Optics Planet. Paid $ 20.99 plus S&H. I use it for my 36 and 640-1. Other than the price, another thing I like is the suede lays flat so when I take the gun out I don't even notice I'm wearing it. There are some fine holsters out there. I guess it all depends on how much you're going to use it, what's comfortable and how much do you want to pay.

My favorite pocket holsters are horsehide leather from Greg Kramer
Holsters.
A lot of guys like the inexpensive synthetic ones like the Nemisis or the Mika, but to me the Kramer is superior. It also costs a lot more than the synthetics do, if you are trying to keep costs down. It will outlast them too, if that is a consideration for you.

I did try the highnoon holster pocket grabbers (leather) although they are made very well i dont wear baggy or loose fitting pants and it to me was very uncomfortable even for a Ruger LCP and a Seecamp 32 so i sent them back and went with soft stlye and couldnt be happier for summer last resort wear......... So many Holsters, So little time !
