Need advice on an old 36-1

I have an old S&W round butt, 38 special, three inch heavy bbl. with fixed sights, target trigger etc.
Crane # R3968 Grip # 3968 butt of grip J7688.

I'm not sure just when I bought this pistol, but it followed me through a career in law enforcement and took it's share of hard knocks and never failed me. Now, however it's time to fix her up and get her in shape to be passed along. She needs some work and I was told that S&W would not do work on older guns.

Would you be able to recommend a good gunsmith to help me as there is much sentimental attachment here.

Are you speaking of a total re-cond to like new condition.Why? if you are going to pass it on to the kids, you have removed Dad from the gun.
Pass it on as is and buy them a new one. Your gun , your money. But I dont know why.

I think a smith needs to check the firing pin and/or the firing pin hole for compliance to spec. At the range I once got a hot load that backed the primer, upon ignition, into the firing pin pocket and locked up the gun. I won't pass this pistol on until I resolve this problem.

Cosmetics are less important to me, but will consider one of the newer finishes (spray & bake)etc.

The serial number (J7688) would indicate a 1969 ship date and being model-marked (36-1) it's possible the factory would be willing to work on it. Be sure to mention the hammer nose bushing issue and the gun's law enforcement "career" when talking to S&W.

I don't think it's old enough for S&W to not fix it. As guns go, it's pretty modern, and was in production for years, until fairly recently.

Another vote for sending it back to the factory; they still have parts for it. As an aside, honest use may appeal to you and your family, but they will also refinish it at a fairly modest cost. Good luck in your decision.

Send it back to S&W. Sent my 1976 34 Kit Gun to them for similar service. They sent me back the replaced worn parts and my .22 good as new. Similar J frame. I'm sure they are more than familiar with what is needed.
