Need advice re 617

Mostly reiteration here, but I have a 4" 617 with lock and a 10 shot cylinder, and it is fabulous! Great for the range and far more accurate than I am. A big brother for it is in the wings, a used but never fired 4" 686 with Altamont grips is on the lay-a way shelf. I think they will enjoy each others company!

I too find the 6" 617 a bit nose heavy, same with the 686.

I do like that DeltaPoint red dot Fred5876r. Is that an easy install, and easily reversible, or would a smith be needed?

If you are looking to mount a red dot on the 617 be aware that the NO Dash models are not drilled and tapped at the factory for scope mounts. 617-1 and later models are. There are mounts you can buy but, they do cost abit more. Here are my no Dash 617's

I'm brand new to the forum today. I love the 617 but am having a tough time tracking one down. I prefer the no dash models with wood combat grips and a 6 inch barrel. Any suggestions out there..........thamnks

If you plan to use in competition and want a red dot, you may be better served with the more recent versions, with the drilled & tapped top strap. I put a Burris Fastfire III on mine with the Alchin mount. It gets the sight as low to the frame as possible.

Is the 6 inch more accurate that the 4 inch. That is a great question. I don't have the answer. If you are going to put a red dot sight on it; get the 4 inch. The longer sight radius won't matter. It only help with accuracy when using iron sights. At least this is what I have experienced shooting Steel Challenge.

If you do put a red dot sight the C-more Railway is what most shooter that I shoot with use for Steel Challenge. MidwayUSA usually have them on sale for $208. Worth every penny.
