Need an extractor that won't fly out.

I've had my new 15-22 Sport for 9 days. The extractor works fine, but has fallen out of the bolt twice. Does anyone make an extractor or extractor/plunger/spring that will stay in the bolt? I've been very lucky to have found all of the parts both times.

The Tailhook looks like it may stand a better chance of staying in: Tailhook S&W M&P15-22 Extractor Replacement Part

The extractor shouldn't just fall out. I'd send it back to S&W to have it checked out before doing any mods.

I agree with Jagular...that whole thing is under enormous pressure, which everyone finds out the first time they remove it and launch it across the room. It certainly does not fall out...most people who have reported them missing have been OOB or misfire related and the parts have launched into infinity and beyond. I'd send it back, the channel in the bolt may be out of spec or the plunger or whatever...either way it sounds like a repair job to me. Replacing your extractor for an aftermarket one wont stop it falling out. Unless I'm misunderstanding 'fallen out' ;)

The first time was between 50 & 75 rounds through the new gun. It jammed. I rolled the gun to the right, pulled the bolt back to clear the jam & saw something black hit the ground. That was the plunger. The spring stayed in the bolt. I found the extractor on the bench. I put it back together & over the next few days probably put 300 rounds through it. Then it jammed again. The plunger fell on the bench this time, but the extractor was found on the ground on the other side of the bench.

To send it back, I'll probably have to put the original trigger, stock & grip back on it, then drive 45 minutes to the UPS distro center to ship it. I agree that it's a new gun & should work & S&W should take care of it, but less than $20 for all new parts seems like a viable option to me. Am I wrong?

Does someone else at your club/you know have a 15-22 you could compare your extractor set up to? As mentioned its in there under some pretty serious tension with the spring, it should not be able to just fall out.

That's a good idea. I'll ask around. Both times it's come out were when I was clearing a jam. The Tailhook extractor, plunger & spring came in yesterday. I've put them in the case that I carry this rifle in. Figure I'll just leave them there till the original flies out again.

It's run a few hundred rounds with no problems. I bought the Tailhook extractor, plunger & spring. I'm keeping them in the case & don't plan to put them in till I lose the factory part again.
