From time-to-time I receive email with attachments which I cannot open. Here is the message I get:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

What am I looking for in the Folder Options (control panel) - what do I need to do? Thanks for your help.

open it with note pad ... there may be a good handfull of jibberish in the text but it should open ... if not .. pitch it and move on

Pete, Check the attachment and see if it is a pdf. You may need the newest version of Acrobat reader 8 to open. Bruce

If you do a Double Right Click on the file name it should ask you what program you want to use and it will depend upon what type of file you are trying to open. Things like .jpg and .tif are imaging files names and would require some type of Imaging software to open it. While the .wvm is a video type file and will require a program such as a Media Program. A .doc is a Word or Text type document and couple be opened with your "note pad" which is built into most operating systems.

Thanks Bruce - I do have the latest version of Acrobat Reader... I cannot see the type of file, the attachment is an updated listing of TV channels offered by my TV provider - I'm guessing I need to ask them (?).

Pete

Pete, send me the file and I'll take a look at it if you want me too. I'm not the best but I try harder. Bruce email in profile

Be VERY careful about this.

1. Make sure of where it came from, even if it purports to be from a friend. Viruses can read an infected person's address book, not just sending TO anyone in the address book, but AS anyone in the address book. When in doubt, confirm that that person sent what you received.

2. People use to send me MS Power Point slideshows. I don't have MS Office, nevermind Power Point. In such circumstances, you can either buy the software needed, or find a free alternative, such as Open Office.

It was a Microsoft excell spreadsheet. I sent you an email with the file opened. Bruce

Thanks Bruce - I received your email explaining... way over my head

You need more programs.....

If you http://filext.com/ for the extension, the 3 letters after the period, like .JPG, .PDF, .WMV, .MP3 ETC....

You'll find out what program it takes to open that file.

Most are free, sorta.
