I know that this is the gunsmithing section for S&W firearms only, but I am in dire need of ideas as to what might be wrong with another brand of firearm, so please forgive me. Yesterday I bought a used American Derringer Co. M-1 derringer in 9mm caliber at the local gun show. I took it to the range and found the trigger pull to be at least 20 lbs. or more!!!! I can barely fire this monster, but I would like to keep it if this can be remedied. From what I have been told one of these derringers in 9mm is pretty rare. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong, and who you recommend to fix it? Our local gunsmith passed away a couple of years ago, and there is no one left here to work on guns. Many thanks in advance!!!!!

Never having owned, or even touched a derringer, here's my guess:

There is no trigger guard on the gun. The only safety feature is the heavy trigger pull.

My guess it it's pretty normal. You sure as heck wouldn't want a light trigger pull. It would be nearly impossible to handle the gun without an AD.
