Two-Bit hit the target squarely. My Terrier #66971 shipped 4-16-1952,
It is a 38/32, pre-model 32, improved I-Frame 1st version, 5-screw.
Another of mine, #57103 shipped likely September 1950, is a post-war transitional with six-screws.
If yours has six-screws, it is a post-war transitional reflecting many characteristics of the pre-war production, including the flat leaf mainspring. Please post a few pictures! I would love to see it, and I'm sure some other folks would as well.

Here is #57103.... (6-screw)

I have an NYPD Terrier that is about thirty numbers away from yours and it shipped April 1952.

Wow! Those are two beauties and with boxes!.
Your Terrier #66971 38/32, pre-model 32, improved I-Frame 1st version, 5-screw is actually two evolutionary steps earlier from a pre model 32:
There's the Improved I frame 2nd version, then the Model of 1953 NEW I Frame which is the pre model 32 with larger trigger guard and 1/8" longer grip frame exactly like the Model 32.

I recently bought a S&W nickel Terrier #58336. Any help with birth date and value would be much appreciated. cannot post photos yet as they are still holding it. Yeah, one of those states. Thank You

Welcome to the S&W Forum, 8shutr!
You have chosen a great place to be!

I have a Terrier somewhat close to yours, SN 57103, a bit over 1200 units away. It shipped (educated guess) September, 1950, and is a blue six-screw post-war transitional.

For better information, I suggest starting a separate thread on this gun (rather than piggybacking on this thread). You will receive more attention to your piece and with that, more information. There is a lot of knowledge among the Forum members, and I would like to see your Terrier get the attention it is due. Please include some pictures too. We love pictures here. Pictures will also help us to help you determine a value. Factory nickel plated ones are less common and command a higher price than comparable blue ones. I'm looking forward to seeing it and would enjoy attempting to help you value it.
