I recently found a pre model
18 like new condition. The only
problem is it's missing the
thumb release. Is there any
reputable places that I can
purchase one. Any assistance
would be appreciated.

What you need is correctly called the "thumbpiece". You will also need the thumbpiece nut. These parts are the same for all K, L, and N Frame revolvers until about 1980. You need the "old style" parts to be correct, although the new style parts will function properly, just not look right!

Start with S&W Customer Service: 800-331-0852 If they can't help try Jack First, Inc, (605) 343-9544 S&W will likely not charge shipping, which will cost more than the parts from other sources! Personally I would use Numrich only as a last resort. I have gotten too many wrong or damaged parts from them.

Anyone know the time frames when these were used. The solid base is the newer one that was used till the MIM parts came out I think.

USAGUNSANDGEAR.com has S&W parts. May have what you are looking for.

Chances are that you will need polished blued parts if pre-WWII. Some of the thumbpieces you will find may be unfinished, nickel plated, or done in matte blue, so contact the seller to ask if they will match your finish or not before you buy? You need to look for an original part, not a reproduction since they may not match your finish color or style.
