Looks like a post WW II Military & Police. Note the fish hook hammer that was common in the 1950s. Service grips were also common on the round butt guns from this era. Are they numbered to the revolver?
The serial number from the butt would make it a bit easier to estimate a shipping date.

c170706 i just took the grips off and the same numbers have been individually punched in the grips also just noticed the serial number is on the face of the cylinder. Any idea what it is worth to the collector. i have it and a 686-5 7 shot mountain gun i am going to be selling.

That serial number points to 1951. I would think that's at least a $400 gun, and possibly a little more. The postwar Pre-!0 snubnose guns are in demand these days, and that looks like a decent specimen. It might go for a little more, but probably not over $500 unless you are dealing with somebody who really wants one. The round butt is somewhat less common than the square butt and will command a premium to some buyers.

I have no idea about the J on the frame, I'm not familiar with that style of stamp. I presume it is a 6 shot revolver? The time frame would point to it being a post war M&P, though the hammer is similar to the target hammer used on the K38.
