Need help identifying.

I have a s&w 38 special ctg looks crome has wood handle with s&w emblem in handle covers. But does not have an emblem stamped in the metal on the right side above the handle like i have seen others have. I can see 3 screws visually on side. not sure if one is under handle or not. and one under trigger. If you can see all screws without taking off handle covers then it makes this a 4 screw gun. it has a half moon sight on the end and does not ramp up to it. I can give the serial if needed. I appreciate any help you can give for i know just enough about it to look like an idiot when i talk about it to the friends. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum. Your gun appears to be a .38 Military & Police with a 5" barrel. Since the hammer and trigger are nickel instead of case-hardened, it has been refinished, and it has stocks from a 1970-80s era round butt K frame gun - this one would have come with different stocks..

If you can tell us any letter and a partial number from the bottom of the grip frame (123xxx, S 789xxx), we can give you a good idea of when it was shipped from the factory.

It is probably from late in the 1910 decade, and it would have had checkered walnut RB stocks with gold medallions. Several Forum members keep track of serial numbers by year and may get you a closer date.

If you are interested, Numrich or e-gunparts.com had the original style stocks for sale.

Thanks.... I appreciate the info... Hopefully I can get a specific year but I'm happy with that. I will definately find out about the grips cause I want it as original as it can be considering the refinishing. Once again.... Thank you.
