Need help ID'ing a 686

Hi All- I've got a 686 that I can not ID. Maybe I'm missing something, but I have studied the SCSW and can not make sense of this gun.
Here's the specs- stainless, yoke markings CS 1, 2M, Mod. 686
3" barrel
black target sights with black standard front ramp(no white outline or colored ramp)
Pachmayr grips
ser# AZH0217
smooth 5/16" trigger
3/8" checkered hammer

Could this be a Lew Horton special? Or?

Its a wee bit more than special than a Lew Horton....

I believe that is one of the Custom's revolvers. The CS = Customs Service, I don't remember many of the particulars but I believe they date to the late 80's or early 90's and were offered in 3" & 4". Perhaps someone else will be better informed and more helpful.

Thanks Aussie Collector- no matter how many times I go thru the SCSW, I seem to always miss something. There is so much info in that book it seems hard to find sometimes.

Also- the product code- Is that number only available on the original box or with a letter from Mr. Jinks?

The product code describes a particular run of a certain model. The letter will tell you when that CS-1 was shipped from the factory, to whom it was shipped to, and what particular features the revolver had. With the limited production run, the CS-1 variation is quite desirable and adds a substantial premium to price. Did you get the original box by chance?

No, we do not have the boxes. As I've stated in other posts, I'm retired and work part-time for a local gun shop doing their internet sales. The shop recently bought some stainless S&W's from a law enforcement agency in our state. They obtained them from a Fed LE agency trade-in many years ago. So besides this 686, we have a few Model 65-3's also with 3" barrels which I'm now beginning to believe that they too may have been special order guns by a Fed agency. I'll post details and pictures of one of them soon for comment. This is not a sale pitch- I'm just trying to properly describe them. Thanks, steve
