A minute of angle is approximately 1 inch per 100 yards. A 2 minute dot covers about 2 inches at 100 yards, 4 inches at 200 yards, etc...

The math...
A full circle is 360 degrees. Each degree equals 60 minutes. With a 100 yard radius, the circumference of the circle is 22,619.46 inches. Divide that by 21,600 (360x60) and you get 1.047 inches.

Think of an ice cream cone (ice cream optional). The angle, from the base going up the opposite sides, is perhaps 30 degrees. One degree of angle is one thirtieth of that. One minute of angle is one sixtieth of that, which won't hold much ice cream. When talking about group size or dots on sights, one minute of angle would cover approximately one inch at a distance of 100 yards.
