Need Help.... As this is new to me (M&P Shield .40) i wasn't sure if this was normal for this gun or a defect..
Problem: My slide lock won't automatically disengage. Makes no difference if there is a loaded, unloaded or no mag at all in the well. I have to manually press the slide release for it to return... How can I fix this??? As I stated before this gun is brand spanking new with only 50 rounds put threw it......

With either a loaded (full or partial, doesn't matter) magazine in, or the magazine out, the slide lock should drop out by spring pressure when you pull the slide to the rear far enough to allow the slide lock to disengage. If it will not run forward without interference when you do that, you should call S&W and ask for a shipping label.

Sounds normal to me. You must either manually release the slide lock or rack the slide to return the slide into battery.

Thanks guys, as i said in my post i'm new to this gun and it just didn't seem to be right. I've tried racking the slide multiple times in all different configurations with negative results on the slide lock releasing... I'm new to this gun not S/A's in general. :)

I happened to notice that the inner portion of my guide rod assembly seizes up from time to to time. When this happens, I am un able to reassemble my Shield, because I cannot pull the slide back far enough to lock it, so I can turn the takedown lever back. I have to take the guide rod assembly out an fiddle with it, to unseize it. I wonder if these issues are related.

I say this because my recoil assembly is locked up pretty bad. Hello, quality control. I have never even fired this thing.

I have 2 Shields (40/9)...when apart if I push the slide lock assembly up on the 40 it stays up...doesnt do that on my 9...as far as locking back without a mag no....just find it odd I can manually push it up and it stays that way

This happened to me before I shot the gun as well but then I realized I was not pulling the slide back with enough force, when it is new and never fired it even tougher mine loosened up some after my first range trip. The trick is before you start to pull the slide back go ahead and start pushing up on the slide release and then really pull back quick and hard on the slide, your slide stop should engage and then you can move the take down lever to complete reassemble.

Just remember to start pushing up on the slide release before you pull the slide back and when you do pull it back do it with quick violent force. Again after my first range trip (100rds) it got easier and I can now do with a lot less force and without pushing up the slide release.

The guns are really stiff out of the box. I've put 120 rounds or so through mine and I also sat of the couch raking the thing one evening while I watched TV. It is loosening up some now.
