Hello Guys,
I have a current production Classic M27. I recently had to open up the side plate to replace the firing pin (that's another story) and noticed that the side plate screw right below the rear sight (Don't know what this is called. I realized the older S&W revolvers didn't have this.) was more difficult to realign and screw down into the frame.
Looking into the tapped screw hole in the frame revealed a cross-threaded first and second threads from the factory. I was able to ease the screw in with a little wiggling and trial and error. The threads on the screw are perfect.
Questions:
1. What is this screw called?
2. Would you know the thread pitch for this? Do all the sideplate screws have the same thread size?
3. Would you bother rethreading the frame hole or just leave as it?
I don't plan on opening up the side plate again. But one never knows. If I have to go in there again, i would likely just clean up the threads with a tap.
I've retapped threads in the past. But don't know if those S&W side plate screw holes are more on the delicate side. That side plate screw is very short, so I know I have little room for error.
