I just inherited my great grandfathers S&W .38 Special Revolver. Attached are the pictures with the serial # as well. Found the number on the yoke if you need it as well. Would like to know the origin and year if possible. New to the forum so excuse my lack of S&W knowledge.

You have a WW2 Victory Model. Made approx. Oct. 1943. The number on the yoke is an assembly number, used during production, and has no importance after production. These guns came in two types - military with military markings and civilian w/o any military markings. If you describe ALL stampings and markings you see, we can tell you which type you have and perhaps which military branch received the gun, if it's the military type. The original finish is a dull wartime blue/black sometimes called "Black Magic" Ed.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! That gun has the GHD (Guy H. Drewry) inspector's stamp but I see no flaming bomb ordinance stamp. I must say that gun looks like it never saw service.

You guys really made my week. Thanks for the awesome feedback and assistance. Great forum to be a part of. Glad to stumble upon this.

Welcome to the Forum.

Did your great grandfather serve in the Navy or the Marine Corps during WW II? Most of the Navy issued Victory revolvers were issued to air crews from those two branches of the military.

Of course, it could have been purchased post WW II also.
