I have a 44 special 4" barrel that is engraved nickel. Pearl handles and the serial number is 336xx. Five screw.

Not a lot of information to go on. If we're sure its a S&W, I'm just going to guess its a late 1920s model. Could be either a 2nd or 3rd model. The third model has a forging as part of the barrel that protects the ejector rod, the 2nd lacks it. Regardless, both share the N frame serial sequence and late 1920s is a real good guess as to age.

I am the new proud owner of a K frame vin#V 645535. only K 539 on the crane. any and all information would be much appreciated. supposed grandpa gun. Just curious as to age and possible value. finish is 6 out of 10 at best. thank you any and all for help.

Thank you all for the info. It is a S&W and has the shroud protecting the ejector. Just got on this forum and will need to check out how to post a picture.

It's always best to start a new thread instead of tagging onto someone else's.

It's clearly a WWII Victory model M&P. However you have not provided enough information or any pictures to identify it more fully. There are several variations of these, and many are found which have been modified in ways that make them essentially worthless.

Probably a 3rd Model which probably shipped sometime in 1930. May possibly be a Wolf & Klar, but I don't know SNs for those. Could be W&K grips, and possibly Mexican engraving. Very interesting and worth a factory letter. Many here know much more about these than I.

It is definitely a 3rd model .44, if it has a matching serial number inside the barrel shroud, and there is a real good chance it was sold through Wolf & Klar of Ft Worth TX.

Thanks for the answers. I am sending off for the factory letter today. Very possibly a Wolf and Klar since my dad lived in Oklahoma all his life and traveled to Ft. Worth frequently.

wazhazne,

I just sent you an e-mail in response to your question.

Congratulations on the historic old W&K with your family history. We are always interested in the story associated with these old pieces and we would enjoy hearing any of its history that you would care to share.

Finally got my letter from Smith & Wesson. The gun was shipped to Wolf and Klar in January of 1930. it was one of three nickel plated 4" barrels shipped. W&K did the pearl grips and engraving.

You are a lucky man to have your father's handgun and such an example of Southwestern history.

I encourage you to fully document its history, complete with pictures and stories of your father. As the years pass it will become more important for your descendants.

To illustrate my point, here is another example that was carried by a man who was the Chief of Police in two Texas towns, given to him by a Texas Ranger, and documented by the chief's daughter. It shipped in February, 1930 and appears to have been done by the same "hand" as yours. They were likely on the workbench at the same time.

Bob - I swore I recognized the engraving when it was posted by wazhazhe. I guess I recognized from yours in an earlier post! Really neat coincidence.

Awesome gun. I really like the 4" barrel. I'm always looking for pics of these 3rd model HE. I have a brother to those myself. It was a TX Ranger gun and he also was a county Sheriff.
