Kinda new to Smiths & I think it's time to let the Rugers rest for awhile & start into the Smith world .

In the wanted section I have listed my pistol looking for a complete box with all factory items & have been offered a box . The box has serial number 44K9845

I just want to make sure it's period correct for my 19-4 that just found it's way to it's new home . The serial number is 40K83XX & I need help with date of MFG .

I have a book of Ruger serial numbers & history that a forum member puts together. Is there one on Smith & Wessons ? If so how or from whom do I aquire one ?

PS : 686 6" on the way Saturday :D .

Thanks for the help.

The serial number range for 1978-1979 is 25K0001 through 56K9999. So yours is right about in the middle.

Hope this helps.

Check out the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. That's where most of us get the information on serial numbers and dates. Plus it's a good read for all things S&W. Should be available in any well stocked book store for about 40 bucks. Some say it's cheaper on-line, but I've never looked.

The -4 variation denotes "Gas ring moved from yoke to cylinder." This also from the SCS&W 3rd edition noted above. I'm guessing it might be out of print as I have seen some outragous asking prices online.
