Local shop called me up to look at a S&W I might be interested in - it's a 17ND, 6" barrel, service style grips with the diamond, non-target hammer & trigger.

SN:K34690x

The only wear I can see is a little at the muzzle on the left side.

I have and use a 17-2 that I love, but if this dates to the right year, I might have to buy it! ;)

Can someone help with an approx. DOB for this one?

Pics to follow if I buy it.

Thanks!

It very likely left the factory in Spring or Summer 1959, based on nearby serial numbers. No guarantees.

The lowest known serial number on a Model 17 is K326533. It shipped in November 1958.

Interesting. It shows as 1958 in the 5th edition.
The serial number lists in the SCSW are approximate manufacture dates. They bear no direct relationship to the ship date for a particular gun. Several factors affect this.
1. Units were not assembled in serial order.
2. Blocks of serial numbers were reserved for particular models and runs of various models were scheduled for assembly based on demand.
3. Units were not shipped in serial order.

Since production logs are not available, the "birth date" for any Smith & Wesson is the ship date. It often will not coincide with the date of assembly and may be a year or more later.

Interesting. Thank you for the reply.
