About to buy a S&W revolver again. Appears to be a Victory model, but I'm a little confused. Stamped
V7 31908 in cylinder, but serial number is S 860810. Barrel stamped S&W Special CTG. Any info on this piece would be greatly appreciated. Can this model take +P ammo? Thanks.

It looks to be a standard 5" early postwar .38 Military & Police, from about 1947.

If the V7 31908 is stamped on the frame under the barrel with the cylinder out, that is a factory internal code that has no relationship to the SN. If it is on the rear cylinder face, however, the cylinder has been replaced with one from a WW II Victory Model. I would guess you will more likely see S 860810 stamped on the cylinder. Hope this is helpful.

Murphydog is right. It is not a Victory Model. It is a postwar .38 Military & Police revolver from about January, 1947.

Thank you for the info.

I've shot quite a lot of +P and +P+ through my 1942 Victory Model. Since factory +P is loaded within recommended pressures for the caliber I don't see why it would cause any problem in your revolver.
