Hi,

I recently aquired a couple of Smith's from a friend.

I am hoping to discover the year made and a general value of them, and any other misc interesting information. I am a lot more familiar with Rugers, but have always wanted a S&W - yes I still want the Dirty Harry version ....

Both guns are in really good shape - He may have shot less than a box through either or very little. He was not much of a gun guy but just had a couple of things around.

I have a:

Mod 28-2 serial # - N5778xx .357 Hiway man, matte finish
other #'s under that - 287X3
then under that - E6

also - is this a k frame, or N - very confusing ... ??

Mod 17-4 serial # - 81K16xx .22 shiny Blue
other #'s under that - G8
then under that - 92221

This I am guessing is a K22 -- does that mean k frame 22 caliber -- if not what ???

can someone say what the other numbers are that appear underneath the mod # serial # ??

Thanks

I appreciate any and all comments

I can help you a bit, but others may chime in. Your Model 28 shows as a 1979 N frame, and your Model 17 as a 1980 K frame. The numbers other than the serial numbers are factory assembly codes and have no other relevance after leaving the S&W plant. As for value, in excellent condition, probably $550"ish" plus or minus $50-$75 for the 28 (4"'ers are going higher than 6"ers) and $500 plus or minus $50 for the Model 17, at least in my area. There is a considerable amount of regional difference in pricing. Hope that helps.

Thanks

very helpful information

any other comments about these irons, or Smith's - what would your favorite holsters be for these? I prefer leather

what would you recommend for holsters?

speed loaders?

I hunt with a Ruger Super Black Hawk - so these will be my first double actions.

any comments on accesory grips ??

Thanks
