We use the Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson 3rd Edition by Supica&Nahas. Available in most chain book stores. Many copies owned here, post a serial number and we can help you out. You can X out the last couple digits if you are paranoid like most of us. :D

locate the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame or inside the
cylinder window under the forcing cone area, then call S&W customer
service and give them what information they ask for and they will tell
you when the gun was shipped.

Post the serial #--usually a letter followed by 5 or 6 digits. N123XXX. A picture and model # would really help.

First off, welcome to the Forum.
I will assume it is an S&W revolver. First tell us what it is. Model number if it has one, caliber, barrel length (measured from front of cylinder to muzzle), finish, and then serial number from bottom of butt.
Then we can probably give you a year of manufacture.
Jim

Open the crane and look on the yoke of the frame. The model number is stamped there.
It is either a model 10, 12, or 64. Serial number places it as a 1983 gun. Not old, but probaly nice, right?

it was my grandmothers, she was a peace officer with the sheriffs dept it says mod 107, is that the model number?

Yup, but look closer, I think you'll see it's stamped 10-7. That would make it what is known as a Military&Police Model 10-7 .38Spl. It would have a tapered barrel, right? They made a gazillion of these from the late 1800s to date. If it's in very nice condition it would be worth about $300 plus or minus. It is safe to fire all modern .38Spl ammo in it. Hope that helps.
BTW, the -7 simply means it's the 7th engineering change since they started model marking them starting in 1957, before that it was simply known as an M&P.

its says mod and underneath that are the numbers 107, is 10-7 a series number or somthing, youll have to excuse me, still new to handguns

Good info by DB. I hope you enjoy it. If it is a 10-7, it is a great gun. Good Luck with it.

it is priceless to me, my grandmother passed away a few years ago, the funny thing is it was produced the year i was born, thank you all for your help

That means Mod. 10. The dash 7 is the 7th engineering change, as previously stated. It was a change to the location of the gas ring. Not really much info for most of us. The ser. # matches to a 1983ish gun. But the 10-7 was made from 77 thru 88.

There is no reason that it should not be a great shooter! They are made to be shot. My dad gave me a Smith from 1919. My son has it now. Still shoots it once and a while. I had a 10-8, which was just a little newer than yours. Enjoy it! Bob
