Just received my m&p fs 40 back from the gun smith
Had a apex fss kit installed. Purchased 2 boxes of winchester winclean 180 grain fmj. 2 separate boxes between the two I had 8 dry fires. The firing pin did fire and made a very deep impression on the primer and I compared the rounds to the rounds that did fire but for some reason these 8 did not until I put them back thru the mag a second time and 1 a third time to finally fire. Should I be concerned with the gun or just **** ammo. I spoke with Matt the gunsmith who installed the trigger and he said he fired a box of fiochhi 165 grain with absolutely no concerns What should I do

I don't think any of the trigger parts affect how hard the striker hits the bullet. That's it's own spring (in the slide). It either gets 'cocked' or it doesn't. I'm not seeing how trigger parts (or anything else) would weaken the striker spring. The strong indentations on the primer seem consistent with that.
Got any other ammo to try?

I bet it is the WinClean. My recollection is that the "lead free" (which might be actually lead free, or very significantly reduced; I think I have heard of the latter) has primers that are a lot less sensitive. Given that you have good firing pin indentations, I am inclined to think the problem is not the gun but the ammo.

If the primer strikes are the same deep impact on the fired and failed-to-fire rounds, then its bad ammo. IMHO

A pistol should reliably set off Win Clean ammo...I'll bet it did BEFORE the gunfoolery occured.

Fired rounds will always have a deeper firing pin impression, because of all that pressure that happened when the round goes off

The firing pin block might be obstructing the firing pin now with the new trigger parts installed

What should I do

Buy another brand of ammo and shoot it. Might show if the pistol, or the ammo, I was thinking.

Had a similar problem with a shotgun and Remington wouldn't touch it until I had tried a different brand of ammo and had the same results.

As I read your post, you had good primer indent which is evidence of ammo malfunction. Try another brand of ammo.

thanks for the input fellas... I don't typically shoot the winclean ammo thru the gun... It was on sale at the range the day I got my gun back and wanted to shoot it right away .. I bought 2 boxes of it.. its never happened before and I usually put PMC or Federal AMMO 180 grain thru it.. I didn't think there was anything to do with the firing pin as it did what its suppose to do and stuck the primer... this weekend I will use a different ammo and give it ago again and see... and as for clean ammo when I came home and field stripped it the barrel was absolutely FILTY with black residue that I don't typically get from the other brands.. ON A POSITIVE NOTE.. THE APEX TRIGGER IS UNBELIEVABLY SMOOTH, SHORT, CONSISTANT and BETTER. M&P should put these in the pistol from the factory...

I put the FSS kit in my Pro and shot it for the first time today. I had one round that did not go off in my reloads. The eldest daughter shot a box of 50 "remanufactured" and had approx. 4 light primer hits. I talked to the gunsmith and he said that he never sees this with just the FSS kit. If people play with the striker spring, then yes, all the time. I also told him that I got oil in the striker channel by accident. He said that that is what was probably wrong. Something to do with hydro something or another... I will have to take off the cap and clean out the striker channel and then blow it out. It has been a rough couple of days gun wise.. Yesterday just missed (by a couple of minutes) being involved in an idiot discharging his gun (gang banger anyone?) over a dispute with another group of people. All this outside the Kansas City Zoo. I did not carry because I did not know if it was allowed. Today I was test firing my 9c and 5" Pro since I put some new Apex parts in them and someone across the indoor range shot the hanging metal target holder and his jacketed bullet fragmented and I caught a large chunk of jacket in my face. I was like, "what the fu&k, did someone just shoot me?!?" Blood was rolling down my face. Freaked out the other patrons at the range and the range owners. I had the doctors check it out, (I almost never go to the doctor for something like this, but it is a decent sized cut and pretty deep) and they don't think I need stitches. Of course I went to the doctors after I cleaned and bandaged the wound and finished shooting.. lol So I don't think I will play with guns tomorrow.

Deep firing pin indentation I would think is bad ammo. That said, I put an APEX in my 9c and had light strikes. That had to do with the striker plunger block not getting out of the way soon enough because the APEX sear is shorter than the original and will release the striker sooner before the striker block has time to get out of the way. A slightly longer trigger bow (?) or welding material on the back of the little tit that moves the plunger up solves the problem.

I agree, bad ammo. Get another brand of non-politically correct ammo and see how it goes. I really don't think it's the gun.

wanted to update everyone who posted on this thread, Just lefted the range tonight purchased 200 rds of American eagle 180 grain fmj and unloaded 200 rounds without 1 single malfunction the gun with the new apex trigger and this ammo ran flawlessly and was very much enjoyable.. I will never use Winchester winclean ammo again.. thanks everyone for the replies and information..
