I recently purchased a N frame 44 Special S&W revolver, blue, with a 4 inch barrel, it has no model number, ser # S1182XX,It has adjustable sights, does anybody know what this is? I am planning to use as a carry gun.

Sounds like a 1950 target 44 special, Pre-24, made around 1955. That is my guess without the BOOK by my side.
It sounds like you have a "Pre 24", which is a 44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Target. The S/N would put it shipped around 1953-54. It should be a 5 screw, with the S&W Logo on the side plate. 4" barrel Pre24's are more scarce than 6 1/2" barrel guns. Depending on condition it can be a fine carry gun, albeit a little heavy, but a fine stopper. These models are quite collectible, and again, depending on condition, may command a fairly decent price.

That could be a fairly expensive gun, I would love to see photos of it. If it's in high original condition, I wouldn't get it near a holster!
