I've looked everywhere, Gun Broker, Guns America, etc. and for the life of me I can't find a scope mount for a Remington over/under derringer. I have an old Lyman Alaskan scope that I think would work well with this gun. Any suggestions?

Custom is the only way to go.

I have had some limited success useing the burris mount off my contender. However, I have determined the results somewhat variable and need to further fine hone my technique in attaching the scope mount as the hinge is the opposite to the contender, with the remington being up and the contender down and forward. I called the engineer at burris and he assured me that they were developing a system that might work, and promised to get back with me soon as they have been getting many similar queires lately, and something had to be done. I will get back to you as soon as they get back with me. He thought and hoped it could be ironed out by 04/01/10 for the short barreled upcomeing sillouette match at jackson hole later that month. Glad to be of help!

Ferril, the Jackson hole shoot is the very reason I brought this up. I just purchased a couple boxes of the new Black Hills National Match .41 Rimfire Wadcutters designed specifically for the short barreed long range competion. Range tests showed great potential and since scopes are allowed in the Jackson Hole shoot (but not in the New Raton match), I thought I could deff. improve my score. Keep in touch.

I just unsuccesfully completed a similar search for my American Derringer in 45LC/.410.

I found what works best for me is a bunge cord and a spotting scope. I find the bunge cord allows for quick changeout of optics for whatever tactical situation I might encounter. My Seal instructor always told me to match the proper optic with the specific task at hand.

I also found that the spotting scope/derringer combo offered a couple of unexpected benefits. First off, the extra 5 lbs of weight helps with recoil reduction of my SD handloads. I've settled on a 400 gr exploding HP that chronys at over 2000 fps and yields over 4000 ft. lbs. of kick azz. I believe this load to be the bare minimum for SD.

The second benefit of the derringer/spotting scope combo is it solves the age old problem of how to carry concealed. No one ever thinks to look under a spotting scope for a gun!

One word of advice: buy more spotting scope than you think you'll need. The initial fixed power 20 with 50mm objective I installed was ok for the close quarter combat shots center of mass. But for anything past 7 feet, I find that my newly purchased astronomy scope to be a superior choice of glass.

I hope this helps!

If you ask nicely maybe GG&G will make you a throw lever mount so that you can put an Aimpoint on it. Otherwise, you'll have to have your favorite gunsmith weld a 1913 rail on the top.

Just got an e-mail response from Hans VonDolphinshlong, rangemaster at the annual Gerbelfest in Golden, Colorado. Using an original Shoyen mount (model 64 1/2) and a rare Fruend two power scope mounted on his RG .22, he achieved a phonomenal 4" group at thirty yards. He hessitated putting a $4000 scope arrangement on a thirty five dollar revolver, but the extrordinary accuracy was well worth it. He hits nine out of ten gerbal plates at a full forty yards. I have no reason to doubt him.

I have never owned a derringer, are they accurate far out enough to make a scope useful anyway? I always thought they were made for shooting a card cheat across or under the table.

I regularly hunt antelope with an American Arms derringer in 257 Weatherby. With open sights. The fact the spitzer bullets stick out of the barrel 3/4's of an inch doesn't seem to effect accuracy at all. Unfortunatly I can't use this caliber in silhouette matches because the bullets are way too destructive.

Sir, one thing to be aware of when scoping a derringer is the scope's objective bell diameter. If you use a scope with a large objective, be sure it has a steel tube rather than aluminum. You may notice that the top barrel shoots to a noticeably lower POI than the bottom barrel; so long as you know your gun and load, this should not present too many problems.

Also, the objective will interfere with straight ejector rods; be sure to get one of the special right-angle versions.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Call Clark Customs, they make a line of 2 1/2" replacement barrels with the weaver base milled in the top, also can customize the twist, I like ¼-20. I use mine with a Docter Red Dot, but I see guys with Nightforce Tactical 12-42/56 scopes mounted that way on Derringers at the 1000 yard range. Your Alaskan should do fine, formidable weapon
