I just picked up my first ever, entry-level AR, a S&W model 811038 with a trident-shaped front sight and a magpul folding rear sight.

What is the sight picture supposed to look like when you are aiming at a bull's eye target?

Any help for the new guy is greatly appreciated! :)

Also, slightly different topic, should I lube it up real good before I shoot it the first time. It seems maybe I wiped off a lot of oil in the process of my first disassemble/reassemble.

Here's a couple pretty good representations of how it should look.

My M&P 15TS was pretty messy from the factory - same with my dad's Sig M400. Personally I'd clean it before shooting it - and lightly oil the bolt carrier group (BCG). Then go have fun!

If you have an A4 front sight post then the top of the front post should be your point of aim. You'll learn soon enough that there is a point of aim and a point of impact. This has to do with how you sight in your iron sights for zero. Typically, I sight in my irons for 50 yards.

For your second question, some people say to clean a brand new rifle before use and then others say to do what you already did and go shoot. I've done both and have never had any issues. This is a user preference. If your rifle has a chromed lined barrel there is a process on how to break it in. Do some more research on google and on this forum.

Thanks for the sight pic info!

I think I will field strip the weapon again, clean it and oil it lightly, especially the bolt carrier group.

As for the barrel, it is 4140 steel.

Thanks to all you helpful people!

Please lose the model number stuff and call it by the model name so that we know what you are talking about without having to look it up. Your rifle is a M&P 15 Sport, or just call it the Sport here. :)

You should clean it before shooting it. Your barrel is melonite treated, so there is no break in procedure, just shoot it.

I noticed that the model you purchased comes with the fixed magazine / bullet button configuration...are you in California or some other restrictive state?

Yes, California.

The reason I bought the Sport now is they might get even more restrictive here in the very near future, so I decided to "pull the trigger" now, so to speak.

I did not want to get left out altogether!
