Need some .22 adivce

I have done a few simple tests over the years and will relate the following.

1. Usually the less than speed of sound will shoot most accurately----the Rem blue green box target used to always shoot best in most all guns.---However, a friend of mine states they are not what they used to be----I do not know as I am still using the many rounds i bought many many years ago.

In the last few tests CCI standard (1070 fps) was very accurate in a few different rifles while the CCI subsonic (1040) shot good too and best in one rifle. (we has an assortment of federal, remington, winchester of varied velocity to try---although one rifle just simply shot the federal match real good---another the green tag).

So----you just have to buy a few different ones and see which your rifle likes (over years---different lots could change results).

AS YOU CHANGE AMMO FOR TESTING---you may have to shoot 3 to 11 rounds before the new ammo settles in.

Stingers will not give you high velocity out of pistols---slower than standard---they use a slower powder, and out there at a distance with a rifle, the velocity has slowed down considerably and now you have a lighter bullet at the business end. (per Jamieson).

Plus they cost a whole bunch more. I think that the best thing about Stingers was the marketing job.

Waste of time to put high end (20 to 40 cents a round) european ammo in low end American guns.

I could go on and be more detailed but you'd fall asleep.

Does anyone know whether CCI 22LR 36 grain High Velocity ammo is OK for use in S&W model 22A? I did not want to start a new thread for this question.

G70,

A friend at the range uses it in his (I don't have a 22A). That CCI (if plated HP) is what they call Mini-Mag. But he prefers CCI Standard Velocity or Federal, and we have been known to trade.

If you only need standard velocity to cycle the gun, you may be wasting money. I have to have the Mini-Mags for some pistols that won't cycle with less.

I have a gunsmith acquaintance who is opposed to Mini-Mags, claims they beat up the gun too quickly.

So you'll find all opinions.

If Mini-Mag is what you can find, it beats the dickens out of Thunderbolt or Remington Golden Bullet.

You are fortunate to have a good selection of .22's. What doesn't do well in one will probably do very well in another.

Personally, I stopped buying the promotional packs of .22LR years ago because of functioning problems in several guns. I will stick to the standard products from Federal, CCI, WW, Remington. I shoot .22 shorts also (Winchester 1885 Low Wall in that caliber, also Winchester 62A and revolvers) and I will always buy these when I see them. Perfectly good for small game.

OK, I admit it, I don't spend much time in this sub forum and I'm sure it has stunted my growth. I mostly shoot 9, 45, 357, 38 and 40.

I apologize for these questions but I'm honestly pretty ignorant of what .22 ammo I should use in my guns. There hasn't been much of a problem the past few years as I couldn't even buy it. I have a bunch of .22 cal. guns but I honestly don't know what is the best .22 to shoot in them. Is it ok to shoot .22 shorts in anything (bought some at Wally today)? Should I avoid High Velocity in some or is HV ok in almost anything. Here is a list of .22s that I have. Can you recommend what type to shoot in each or what to avoid? I'm looking forward to exercising all of them now that ammo is in the stores.

High Standard Victor, ca 1978
Ruger Standard, ca. 1980
