A buddy of mine offered me his S&W model C rifle. It is not all original as it currently sits in a Lone Wolf Summit XL stock and has been rebarreled. I was wondering if you guys could give me some details on the action. I am going to go look at this weekend. I have seen it before but haven't paid that much attention to it. From my research, I was thinking it was kind of a rescaled mauser action. My buddy said that Husqvarna made some actions like that, but this one is a rounded action like an old Remington. I do remember it being as smooth as any Sako I had ever worked. I know the Lone Wolf Stocks are super light (I think that one is like 15 ounces). My buddy said the gun weighed like 5.4 pounds. I was wondering if you guys could let me know what to look for on the action. My buddy said it is marked S&W model C, but I was thinking that these were rescaled mausers. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a nice rifle, depending on the price it might be a steal, Husqvarna made really high quality products.

The S&W Model C and the Husqvarna model are identical actions, as Husqvarna made these rifles for S&W. The S&W brochure for the Model C says " ACTION; New and completely redesigned to give the ultimate in smooth operation, eliminating the binding and roughness found in other bolt actions " The action is a self cocking Mauser type with three locking lugs. Standard calibers offered were .243, 270 Win, 308 Win and 30-06 Spfld. Other calibers were available on special order and many guns shipped to Europe were in metric calibers. Weight was 6.6 lbs. Price $192.50 in 1973. I don't think the modifications your buddy has done hurt the gun's value that much, however a 5.4 lb gun, in a big caliber, can be a killer gun when it comes to recoil, and you like to do a lot of shooting with it. Ed.

The first S&W rifles were built by Husqvarna on their version of the 98
Mauser. Around 1969 Husqvarna redesigned the action and called it
the HVA 800. It did away with the primary Mauser feature, the long
claw extractor. Later S&W rifles were built on the Japanese made Howa
action which does have a basically round reciever. So, if the action has
a Mauser type extractor it's original Husqvarna. If it says Husqvarna
and has a small extractor and plunger ejector it's a Husqvarna 800.
If it says in small letters on the side of the receiver "Made in Japan"it's a Howa. Modified as you describe I don't think it's worth a lot of
money period.
