Need some help...

I have acquired a model 28 Highway patrolman revolver. I'm a certified peace officer here in GA and got it in a trade for .308 ammo. Its just cool and functions so I figure why not its a great peace of history and looks like a cool gun. I have replaced the rear sight blade since the old one was broken and re-blued it due to heavy wear.

I want to know what it might be worth and how to figure out where it may have come from. I also want to put a set of grips on it that are made of wood so any help on what type are period correct would be nice.

SSN: N2958** Its on the butt plate and behind the yoke, its MOD 28-2 under it behind the yoke. It has the rear adjustable post war adjustable rear sights, a three screw side plate, and is chambered to a .357 with a 6 in barrel. these are the pictures I have of it on hand before the re blueing.

The price (notice I didn't use the word "value") of HPs has gone crazy of late and it would be difficult to really assign one to your example. Sad to say, most of the really outrageous prices are being paid for unaltered guns and the reblue actually hurt the value somewhat in that respect. If you want it for yourself however, you are the only one you will have to satisfy. I'll take a WAG and say that I would try to get an example like yours here in VA for $350-400 or so in a favorable trade, but wouldn't be surprised to see twice that or more being asked for it, especially with original bluing and grips. The "proper" grips you seek for it will probably run somewhere in the $100-200 range or more. You might also consider a set of service ("magna") type wood grips which were original equipment on many of the HPs.

Look for grips on ebay. I have bought many sets there in the past. What you need to do, is to find what grip fits/feels good in your hand. If a local shop had guns with examples of each on them, you could figure it out. I do not like combat grips. That is my preference. ALL of my Smith revolvers wear target grips. They work for me. I don't care if they are era correct. Reblue will not increase the value of the gun.
I have an earlier 28 in 6" as yours. It is a 1960, S serial# gun. I have mint diamond target grips for it, but have Herrett Target grips on it.

I figured re-bluing it would hurt it price wise but the wear was causing rust on exposed metal so my OCD kicked in. (literally bear metal, made me **** a brick.) its more of a cool factor for me than a price thing. An Officer years and years ago carried this gun, 20+ years before I was born.

I will definitely look into a letter for it, not for really any other reason than a cool factor.

And I hope it shoots as great as it looks and feels. I haven't had a chance to put any rounds through it but that .357 round just looks killer to shoot watermelons with.

Just as an FYI. I just bought a 4” 28-2 (1974) that has the factory original Magna grips.

A six inch Highway Patrolman would not look right wearing Magnas. Football cutout Targets or Smooth Targets would look real nice on it.

But the Pachmyrs you have on there are definitely usable. Either way do some research on:
