New to the forum. Hope I'm in the right place, but here goes. I bought a group of handguns recently, and included was a Smith and Wesson 22LR revolver that I don't recognize. It has 4" barrel, 6 shot, flat latch cylinder release, and the only number I can find is in the yoke, 8850 with a capital H above it. Serial is 574x. Very light, but attracts a magnet. All the standard S&W logo on side and emblems on the wood grips. I'm sure it probably something everyone knows...except me.

Sounds like a postwar Kit Gun to me. Can you post some pictures?
It is to be hoped that Jim (Hondo44) will be around soon. He's forgotten more about I and J frames than most of us will ever know.

This is confusing. The 8850 is the "only number [you] can find" but then you give us the serial number . . .
Is 574x on the butt? Is it really only four digits?

When I said I could only find one set of numbers, I was referring to possible model numbers. The serial # is only four digits long. I am trying to download some picture if my internet service will stay with me long enough to do it. Sometime I think I would be better off with a Dixie cup and a string!

Can't answer your questions, but someone here will.

Welcome to the best gun forum around, from an old guy in Louisville.

Definitely looks like a postwar Kit Gun. We need to get Jim to look at it. As I mentioned, he's the resident expert on the I frames.

Thanks for the help. I'll keep an eye out for any response from Jim. Anybody got any idea of the value?
Thanks
Norm

Can you check if a magnet sticks to the cylinder? It may be either a steel or Airweight Kit Gun; the latter will have a steel barrel and alloy frame and cylinder. The wear on the cylinder is consistent with flaking off an anodized surface.

I would guess it to be a $450-500 gun or so.
