My mom's friend just lost her husband and wanted these out of her house. The first is a Smith and Wesson in .38 S&W. It is a little dirty but seems to be in good shape. 5 shot cylinder. Can anyone tell me the model? The possible year? What is the approximate value? Is .38 S&W still available? Is it black powder?

If you could help me on this one it'd be great. The second is a Harrington and Richardson Arms Company. Unknown caliber. I think it might be .32. Model? Caliber? Year? Ammo available? Value? It is in worse condition than the other. It was nickel finished but most has came off. It has a 6 shot cylinder. This one however does not seem to work properly. The cylinder will not rotate as you pull the trigger.

Any help is very appreciated.

Thanks Joe

The first is a 38 Safety Hammerless, also known as a Lemon Squeezer. The serial number would help ID the exact version and thereby an approximate value. The S/N should be stamped on the bottom of the grip frame.

I can't help you on the H&R, but I'm sure someone will show up who can help you.

Joe,
OK, based on the S/N what you have is a 38 Safety Hammerless 4th model, made from 1897 - 1907, with your's probably being aroune 1903 or so. I'm not haveing much luck pulling up the full size pictures on my PC right now to determine how good the finish is. Vaulues for this gun go up to around $650 for As New versions and go down to around $100 for poor condition. If the blue is not completely worn off anywhere, there are no scratches or rust, and the grips are not cracked it's probably easily worth $450. The closer to perfect, the higher it will go and vise versa.

Thanks Bill, I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow. I would say the bluing is 80-85%, grips are good, bore is sharp with a few pits but still shiny.

I would say closer to 250-300 dollars. At one time, not too long ago, you couldn't give them away. Sometimes it takes folks a while to appreciate a good gun. Buy it and keep it yourself if you can. At least you have a connection to the gun. If someone thinks I'm off on the value please chime in.
Thanks for the pictures.
