I had a friend make me an offer on a I think a 687 revolver...He got it on a trade a few years back...New in the box and it is a 7 shooter. He wants 800 dollars and even though I saw it once I know nothing about them It is new and going to go look tomorrow It is a 4 inch in the blue clamshell box...Worth 800?? ...He's leaving the area on Wednesday so the time constraints come into play...Don't need it but got some money burning a hole in my pocket!

If it's just a run of the mill 686-6, then it's not that great of a deal. Easy to tell…the -6 has the internal lock and I would pass on it at that price. Very common variation.

If it is a 686-4 7 shot, you should not pass it up, especially in a 4".

There is a possibility it's a 681; maybe your friend mistook the 1 for a 7? If so, that would be either a Lew Horton or a Camfour special production revolver and highly sought after. Since he has the box, you can check the product code and we can tell you exactly what it is.

Pretty much any 7 shot sans internal lock…go for it!

Best I can say it is a 7 shot revolver...I remember him taking it on partial trade for a decent Model 70 in 300 H&H I had sold him at a gun show....I pretty much don't follow newer S&Ws. Other than that I haven't seen it since...I do know he bought one of those quick loaders I had acquired somewhere...Still have 2 more

And I am going to buy it...don't know ig it has a lock. He has a few others he wants to sell...but some I sold/traded to him..oh it is 4 inch adj sight gun He also has a Ruger(101) in 22 that interests me but ...but I have a bunch of 22s. I am still trying to learn this darn computer thing so I can post pics My daughter loaded a whole bunch of pics while she was here guns and serial numbers for ins purposes

What do you mean, you don't need it? The only way you wouldn't need it, is if you already had a 4" 686!

Yeah, we're enablers here😆

$800 for a newer 686 4" with the IL isn't a horrible price, but I'd try and talk him down to $700 if you haven't already committed to the full price.

I based my earlier post on the fact that I try and find models that hold their value better than newer garden variety models, and assiduously avoid anything with the IL, especially since S&W is starting to reintroduce some models without the lock.

Glad that you are getting it. If there's one ubiquitous revolver that everyone should have, it's an L frame .357.
