Any smart phone will be GPS capable but there are no $50 smart phones. You can get prepaid smart phones for around $100 but I don't know how their GPS would work since it eats data.

Who is your cell phone provider now? I just got my dad a the LG K10, priced at $150. Not a bad phone for him. And not a bad phone overall if you are not looking to do the latest and greatest. But as far as I know it's only sold through AT&T.

If you have not bought a phone I a long time it works a little different today. Now the companies finance the phone to you until you pay off the full price. At which point you then just pay your plan. While you are financing the phone the payments are spread out over 2 years. The more expensive phones are $30/month on top of your service plan. That's not a bad option. I just got a new phone which is $30/month and my monthly bill is $75 with the phone.

My dad's phone was only $150 so I just payed cash for it. However if I were to have financed it it would have been something like $7/month

Don't all smart phones these days have GPS? Who is your carrier?

I dont know but--im using Cricket for now. All I need is a cheap enough one to get started. I need one with GPS/internet capability as im going to-hopefully by November? use my car in one of those ride-share programs in order to make a bit more. Im needing to do this because I need to help Sabrina out with her healthcare expenses-and her relocation back here to Corpus.

All smartphones do. Many new smartphones are cheap or free when signing a service contract.

But for just a phone... you can pick up used iPhones like the 4 and others for $100. With my old iPhone 4s the GPS/Navigation works without cell service. Just use a wi-fi connection, ask for directions, and then it's all loaded on the phone for that trip. After that, the GPS works just like a Garmin while you're driving. That said, there is no rerouting or any changes you can make to the route unless you reconnect to another wi-fi service.

Any smart phone will do it. Uber asks you which GPS you want as default (Uber, Google, Waze...etc..). Screen size may matter depending on your eyesight.

They are all trying to do away with contracts. In the long run its cheaper not using the contract since they don't charge you a fee which never goes away.

I work with a guy who used to drive for Uber. He says you can use your own GPS like TomTom or Garmin but they can be wrong more often than Google/Uber/Waze since they rely on updates. Also people tend to get annoyed when they get in and you're taking time typing in the destination.... especially when it can't find it (if you're using Uber's GPS that's on them).

GPS does not use data, the navigation apps that come with the phones is what uses the data. You can download navigation apps which let you pre-download maps and use those rather than data.

Yes but at that point it's just a digital map, not navigation. You have to look for roads where you need to turn. It may be fine forcyou but as a business I don't think passengers want you look for the roads, checking mileage, possible missing turns and turning around

As long as the route is loaded up the navigation works, turn by turn directions and all.

For example. I have an old iPhone 4s with no service. While at home with wi-fi, I can tell Siri - Take me to the closest Home Depot. The nav and maps are loaded up... that's it. Works exactly as it should, voice turn by turn directions and all. If you veer off the route you'll still ping on the map and it will show your location, but it won't reroute nor can you get navigation to anywhere else absent another wi-fi connection.

I seldom have any need for GPS, as I have yet to use Uber or any of the rideshare services. Rarely I use a Garmin GPS in my car (which I bought at a garage sale for $10).

No, the GPS in the phone will still display your location on the map. It just takes a little longer to get the first position without the network assistance (aGPS) but it still works fine once it gets a fix.

GPS is a receive only signal from satellites, no data plan needed.

I have yet to use any ride share but I use my GPS often. If you don't go anywhere new you don't need one.
