NeedDOB on old M&P

Friend showed me a new acquisition a 4" 5screw with small grips, round butt, blued with last patent date on barrel of Dec 1908. Serial #1427XX. Need help to determine date of birth. Appreciate your help.

It is likely from 1908; I have a .38 M & P in my records that is less than 200 digits away that shipped late that year. You can debate calling it a model 1902 or a round butt 1905...many others here have . Hope this is helpful.

Thanks guys didn't mean to double post. I'm just trying to keep my friend from butchering this old Smith. He wants to make a "belly gun" out of it! After further examination, it has a replacement hammer in it that appears from the 1970s. Guess you can't save them all. I'm going to try and talk him out of the old wood service grips.

That's unlikely to fit. Hammers changed c. 1948.
