Last summer a boar grizzly set up shop just south of town. He got to dining on rib steaks and went to bear heaven, a little over a month ago a wolverine showed up by the Jr High school, probably smelled nearby McDonalds. Now the Fur and Fin dept says there is another Grizzly north of town. There are always black bears around, lion tracks show up in town. I am sure that is because all the deer make it look like a buffet. A moose moved into one of the ponds a while back. Interestingly the nearby elk don't seem ever come into town. I have seen several foxes, but I have never a coyote in town, but lots of them not far out and that is kinda odd. I find it interesting how much the grizzlies are spreading out. The wolverine was weird. Their are fewer of them than the big bears. They "believe" there are only 250-300 wolverines in the state and about 1000 grizzlies.

I was talking to a business man the other night and he said all the realtors are getting tons of out of state callers looking for property here. I would rather have the wolverines and the bears myself.

Ask him how many calls he was getting in January. I used to hear people say how much they loved visiting Alaska. I'd ask them when they visited. June or July was the common answer. Try January, I'd tell them. I didn't get too many takers.

He said they told him that they used to get a few calls in the summertime when tourist went through. He said now it is constant. Bozeman which is only 200 miles away is around 50,000 and growing at over a 4% rate

I heard that the average home price in Montana is $6000,000!

6 million hardly and not 600k either Hardly. I would sell you my 7 year old 1800sq ft 4 bedroom 2 bath house natural gas central air with attached shop of the same size, a 800sq ft storage shed, with a green 144sq ft house sitting on a acre in a nice location for less than 600k. Only 1/4 mile to a couple miles of path along a trout stream. There is a 2 acre spot across the road with a about an 900sq fr house and some shop that has been empty a 3 years now.

Depends on what house, how old, how big etc and where just like most places. I bet there are lots of decent 3 bedrooms well under 250,000 in the state.

There are some spots of course In Big Sky residences run from 5 mill up. It cost 400k to join the Yellowstone club. Right now in Bozeman a 1 bedroom apartment rounds over 2k a month. My wife rents out a 1 bedroom furnished house, utilities paid with small garage in Great Falls for I think $950. But, you could find a house in some place like Jordan Montana for under 100k

I wish I could move there. But no.

When I retired from my real job in '08, my plan was to buy property in the Whitefish, Columbia Falls -Kalispell area. My plan was to re-certify my FAA helo ticket and open some kind of flying business. But life happens and things change. Hope I can make it back up that way again and soon. Absolutely a beautiful area of natural beauty.

Trying to move from my "Burb of the Burgh" to the lake in the Laurel Highlands of Pa. Been in the area since 1963; Mom and Dad retired to the "cabin" in 1978....

But as more and more folks are transitioning from "weekenders" to full time..... the "nut jobs" are coming along with the good folk!

That area has become a suburb of California filled with yuppies and trust funders. Homes around there probably average over 600K now. Great geographical area, but not much Montanatude left around there.

Montana is getting a lot of Californians, Seattlites, trust funders and work from home techies who come for the "life style" then want to have a bunch of laws to control things.

Ahhh yes, I can relate. Currently overlooking the abundant wildlife in the beautiful canyons of the Big Apple, while waiting for my surgeon.

Whose got it better than me, eh? But SHHHH!! Keep it just between you and me. Wouldn't want too many "discovering" it.

I talk about it here yes. Face it people are going to move in. Better the kind if people that hang out here than some we are getting.

The are is hardly a secret, People plan vacations, ski trips, hunting trips, fishing trips etc etc in this state. In the summer they come with RVs, in the fall 4x4s dragging their 4 wheelers, in the winter SUVs with ski racks.

I'm looking for a 400 sq ft cabin close to the prairie dog patch. Occupancy would be June 1 to September 10.

Buy a decent camp Trailer and pay some rancher a few bucks a month to plug it in in the summer. Why leave before big game season? Grouse opens Sept 1, Pheasants Oct 8, Antelope Oct 8, Deer and Elk, Oct 22 and general season doesn't close till Nov 27.
