Anyone here use the over the counter remedy Neuragen for relief of Peripheral Neuropathy? The burning tingling in the feet that comes with being diabetic, does this stuff work? Is there any non-prescription remedy that does?

I was diagnosed with it in '88 and have tried virtually everything out there. Hydrocodone would be great but no Dr. will let me have it, The only thing that has helped me is Elevil and Tramadol. They are as cheap as OTC and I have no trouble getting plenty of refills. Good luck with your search and please let us know if you find anything that works. Another Arkansan said one time, "I feel your pain".

I had it for a number of years. Changed to a healthier diet and started taking a good B complex along with trace minerals. I had burning, tingling, decreased 2 point sensory discrimination, etc. Official Dx by my neurologist, my internist and my chiropractor. For once they all agreed.

Got my blood sugar level under control and my A1c down to non-diabetic levels. Got off insulin & CPAP.

What an annoying PITA!!!

Wow, other members have this as well? Thought I was the only one. Non-diabetic PN, I've had all the blood work, neuro, etc. Been perscribed 15mg ocycodone (which I only take at night) & others which help, but I have to watch the dosage,. I was given a Lidocane cream 5% which helps, but it never goes away. I lived with it for years untill breaking down and finding a pain management place that I trust. I don't like taking the pills but what else you going to do? I tried diet, B vitamins and all the rest, no help.
My blood work inticate cholestoral level of 143, triglides normal etc, so they don't know what has cuased this, I have mild PN in my hands as well.
Any recomendations for shoes from fellow sufferers? I'm on my feet most of the day and just haven't had any luck finding really comfortable, soft shoes. I'm beginning to think they just don't exist.
I feel for you.

Being diabetic my pediatrist ordered me diabetic shoes. they are the most comfortable shoes i have ever had. They are a bit pricey if you don't have insurance.

PN Relief

My Dr. prescribed Gabapentin 400 Mg. for pn, & it helped tremendously. 2 capsules at night gives me almost complete relief. I usually only have problems with it at night. I hope this helps.

Re: "Other shoes"....

I've had wonderful experience with custom work done by "Earthwalkers.biz"

Takes a while to get your order. Most comfortable boot I've ever had at any price.

No, I am not a shill. Very pleased with Stefan's work.

Aloha,

Being in Hawaii and retired, I wear Crocs all the time. They have little nubbies that massage the toes and feet bottoms when walking.

Crocs also have Diabetic Specific models which are pricey and may not fit. Check them out.

Ditto on taking Gabapentin, also called Neurontin. One is the generic name. But it's a prescription item.

My PN is not diabetic, nor due to excessive drinking, the two main causes. The doc doesn't seem to know what's causing it, and she said that often, they never find out. I'm due for some additional tests soon, but at the VA, so I'm about as scared as I am hopeful. Now that I have Medicare, I'm going to look for a non-VA doc.

But 300 MG of Gabapention in the morning and another300 at night helps a lot. And I notice more feeling, greater sensitivity, in my feet after a hot bath.

Thanks fellow sufferers, my Doc had me on Neurontin for 5 months, I gained 45lbs! Had to start taking HCT to 'go' all the time. I do wish I had taken better care of myself over the years, not obese, try to watch my diet and all. But things like this run in my family, as well as gout, RA and Alszhiemers (can't wait for that one). I do like the beer after work, dam the Irish ancestry, always have, swithced to light beer and slowed down alot, but no change.
The topical Lycocaine creame I mentioned really helps, not expensive but an Rx item, put it on at night and before going to work.
I'll check on the shoes's mentioned. I don't mind paying for quality footwear.
I did not know so many others had this.

I'm 62 and my symptoms started 3 years ago. Rapid progression since then I must say. Doctor warned me 10 years ago about alcohol. But what do doctors know. How old are you folks?

49, mine started 3 years ago as well, first in the tips of toes, then rapidly up the lower legs. Used to drink far too much, not so much anyomore. My Paki doc (no offense meant, he is really great) says that's the problem, maybe he's right. But old habits die hard, I've always loved the taste of beer. Both my parents have it and niether where heavy drinkers, can't speak for the rest, but I think heredity has alot to do with it.

I've been tested 3 or 4 times for diabetes, negative, they ran a full battery of blood work on me, including heavy metals: lead, arsenic, everything, all negative. Kind of just accepted it. Like gout, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I've done a little research. It seems beer drinkers are the ones who get this the most, if it's alcohol related. I've also read some scary stuff about almost total debilitation. I've cut my beer drinking substantially but since I'm divorced and live alone, I get bored. Now that I'm on SS and work part time I've got a lot of time on my hands. My family had a lot of health issues, cancer, heart, and booze, all died young. Everybody's dead, I'm an only child, so I figure I don't have much longer anyway. Why quit drinking. Bad attitude I know, but I notice that drinking really makes the neuropathy escalate. There's time's when I clomp around like Frankenstein. I recognize the symptoms in other seniors and almost wanted to stop somebody and ask "how you doing". I'm interested in the topic being discussed here. I thought I was alone. My croaker is an Indian. Great little guy. When he's not doctoring, he's a storm chaser. He's a character. He's taking a real shot in the shorts now because the bulk of his patients are on medicare.

Ditto for me on the Gabapentin at 300mg at bedtime. I also take a megadose of Rx Vit B called Metanx 2x a day. It works about 95+% of the time. Night time is also when it gets me.My A1c runs about 6.2 and at 68 its a challenge trying to get it lower. Exercise helps.

Mrs. Pawncop has neuropathy due to diabetes. Tried Neurontin without success. Elavil really helped her but needs elevated doses to be successful.

Best of luck to you. This is a really annoying condition, and do not take it lightly.

I'm 62 and have had non diabetic neuropathy for about 11 years. I've never been a drinker. My only vice was cigarettes. Neurontin & Lyrica were only marginally effective. I sleep with my feet uncovered and a fan blowing across the foot of the bed.

On the "inside" or the "outside" for the DMSO?

DMSO is applied topically. Some people with arthritis swear by it.

You need to get reagent grade DMSO; the solvent grade has impurieties that could make you very, very sick. Some have enough impurities to be carcinogenic.

You have to dilute it to 50% with distilled water for topical use.

Now the catch: it's only been approved by the FDA to treat interstitial cystitis.

That means it's very difficult to get any that's pure unough to be safe.

If you know anyone who works with cryogenics, that's what really high purity DMSO is used for: freezing live cells, ova, sperm, embryos, etc.

My elderly Mother has terrible peripheral neuropathy, and she doesn't tolerate pain killers AT ALL. Same with Elevil and Neurontin.

Neuragen is a homeopathic remedy, so it works for some people, and not others. Like everything else used to treat peripheral neuropathy, for that matter.

Good luck.
