Well, I finally got some free time to hit the range with the new-to-me 1076. I was really surprised by it's accuracy. I have had one 3rd gen S&W (4006) and was terribly disappointed with the accuracy....I could fire the whole magazine at the side of a barn and never hit anything....this 1076 has redeemed the 3rd gen S&W's for now....see for yourself....

Maybe it is the 10mm that makes it like a laser beam? What do you guys think?

...and thanks to the lovely spokes-model who held it up while I snapped a photo...this was 3 shots at 21 feet, DA first shot, SA last 2 - all three were 20+ years old Winchester Silver Tip ammo that was hiding in a box with some 38 Super.

That's a nice group there. I wish mine shot like that, but it's not the guns fault. My 1076 and 1086 are by far the easiest of my collection to shoot well.

Are those those modified grips that one of the members here does? What's his name again? I may have to send him a pair for some improvement.

Daniel,

Those grips are factory and they have no swell. I like them fine, but have considered getting all 3 styles and trying them out. I don't know who modifies them, but I am just about certain that someone here will chime right in with an answer for ya.

Boy that seems like real close range shooting :D Just kidding, nice shooting, and congrats on the addition of the 1076.

Nice shooting SAFireman! Actually the 10mm does have a good reputation for accuracy compared to it's smaller brother. IMHO it had more to do with the .40s hi-intensity pressure spike and that the early forties were rushed to production before the bugs got worked out.
The 10mm on the other hand matured at a regular pace, but did/does tend to wear out the pistols that fire it if the recoil spring isn't replaced regularly. Dale

SAFireman, nice shootin' and a great pistol!

I have enjoyed the S&W 1006 since early 1990 and it has been very reliable and very accurate even out to 130 yards.

I also have managed to obtain two Bar-Sto Match grade conversion barrels one in 40S&W the other in 9x25Dillon for the 1006.

Seeing how these are not being produced any more, I can only wish to obtain a 40 S&W for my 1076 and even a 357SIG conversion as these would be great additions to these fine weapons.

BTW I'm retired FD myself.

Shadow,

I have been into the 10mm since a friend who worked part-time at a gun store converted me....to be honest, I was halfway there with the 41 Remington Magnums and he just nudged me over to the dark side (10mm). My first 10mm was a Colt Delta Elite in Bright Stainless, it was his personal gun that he let me try out, and I never returned it, but I did fund his acquisition of an original Bren 10 (not entirely though...). I had the DE for several years before I ran across a Delta Gold Cup National Match. I sold my dad the DE and bought the DGCMN which I still tote around today. The 1076 was a leap of faith as my first 3rd gen S&W was just plain awful....it was heavy and inaccurate. The new 1076 has me thinking that I had one seriously defective 4006.

I think that you and I corresponded a while back when 10mmtalk.com still existed (as a separate website before ar15.com took the reins)....I got some of my very first insight into the 10mm there several years back, but the forum was not nearly as active as this one, so I never spent too much time there.

If you find a source of caliber conversion barrels, let us know! I would like to have 357 and 40 for my 1076.

Happy Holidays and good shooting.

Sheeez. My 4566 is hiding its face in shame.

Nice shootin'!

Thanks!

My dad's first comment was that I needed to back up to at least 10 feet  , but those 3 were shot from the 7 yard line at one of our local ranges. Nobody was as surprised as I was. I was not planning to take that one to the range, but my gunsmith buddy had it ready to go when I was over at his place rummaging for a front sight for a Colt...he only had 4 rounds of 10mm and I let me wife shoot one of them just to try it out....I guess a for-real range session is warranted.

Happy Holidays to you as well, I kind of thought you had been on the 10mmTalk site, and yes it has slowed down some but has a few good spirts of chatter from time to time. One of the guys invited Irvin Stone the III of Bar-Sto to the site, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

If we could only convince him to do a run of S&W barrels again it would be fantastic...

Best regards!

I just got a 1076 and took it to the range last week and was consistently low and left. After 100 rounds it was still left and low but with smaller groups. Several threads have mentioned one shooter all over the place (me) and another shooter grouping dead on with the same weapon. Does the 1076 require a special touch? I would love to put a laser on it, but can't track one down.

You don't need a laser....just some practice with less than full power loads and you will get better. The DA/SA guns are tricky to master at first, but once you get the hang of them, they are fantastic....I cut my teeth on Sig p226/229 models and once I figured out what I needed to to make them work - WOW! they are great, same with the DA/SA S&W autos....just give it some time at 7-9 yards with FMJ ammo (not hot stuff) and after about 500-1000 rounds, you ought to be getting better.....also, find a friend who shoots to spot you with some dummy rounds to see if you have developed some bad habits.

Best luck - if you were in my neck of the woods, you could come shoot with me, I'm a virtual encyclopedia of useless information .

Happy Holidays Y'all :)

Thanks for the response. Went back to the range today and found that the rear sight has been moved to the left from center at some time in its' history. My groups were getting tighter, but were still left of my aim point. I didn't have the tools with me to properly move the rear sight. I will do that and go back to working on getting the groups nice and tight.

Dave

From my experience -- and pretty much everything else I've heard -- the 10mm may be the most inherently accurate round pistol round ever developed.
