Just picked up the above....this one has the non-target hammer and trigger and the small grips....IIRC correctly, the 27s of this vintage came with 3Ts or like this one?

Gun appears unfired....

It depends on the serial number, I have a 1974 vintage 27-2 and it has from the factory only a target hammer with white outline sight and the red ramp. It has the standard trigger.

Many 5" and 3.5" Mod 27-2's were shipped along side the "Presentation" boxed guns during the dash 2 period. They all had the standard trigger, hammer, magna grips and were shipped in a blue box.

Some were shipped with varying configurations like a target trigger or hammer but only by special order from my recollection.

None of the Mod 27-2's were shipped with a red ramp or white outline unless it was special ordered. The many 3.5 and 5" guns I saw during that time frame, either "blue box" or Presentation cased, all had "Baughman" front sights. The 6 and 8 3/8" guns all had "Patridge" front sights...

I can recall purchasing one new "blue box" Mod 27-2 for $146 retail....

The way I remember it (yes- I am old), 27-2's came in a blue box with magnas, standard trigger and hammer, and plain sights until they started putting them in the presentation case. I believe the ones in the presentation case came with targets, TT,TH, and rrfs and wors. Not sure what year the change was made. This is not to say that you couldn't find other special order configurations.

Here is 5 inch Model 27-2, S/N N109XXX, shipped May, 1973.
I bought it new in June, 1973. It came in a 2 piece blue box, exactly like you see it here.
Hope this helps.

The upgrade of the Model 27 was authorized in September 1975, but I am sure it took several months or longer to completely exhaust what was in the production pipeline.

A RR/WO was not part of the upgrade package.

Simply stunning Teesur! Great photography of the nicest revolver and best bbl length. You were smart to hold onto it.

I had a 5-screw 5" with original Magnas and the Gold box. The gun had had serious timing problems, with firing pin strikes all over the face of the cylinder, which I why I picked it up for a song. It shot well and had a good finish otherwise. Sadly, the ex-wife stole it, along with the rest of the collection, but it was a lot cheaper than lawyers.

Wonder how hard it is to find a 5"er in decent shape these days? Not many on GB.

Here is my 27-2 5" that came in a presentation case with target trigger and hammer so it agrees with what others have said here.

I picked up my 5" 27-2 about 3 years ago from a local LEO for $400 with some plastic Rogers-type grips on it. I put a set of reworked walnut targets on it and it is one of my favorite shooters. It has told me that it really wants a 3.5" "little brother" to keep company with, so I'm looking... It has standard hammer and trigger, plain black sights. I have no box or other goodies with it.

ma66212 - The engineering changes are listed on page 195 of the Standard Catalog of Smith & wesson by Supica and Nahas. If you are going to collect the model 27, you'll need a copy. It will also be invaluable when your collection grows to include other models. Good luck with your 27 collecttion!

I agree. I found a good deal on mine at Amazon.com.

It is nice to see another 5" 27-2 in the presentation case with mitered corners. I've only seen one other case like it. Here's mine with target trigger, target hammer and target grips. Serial number indicates 1975 but Roy Jinks says April 1977.

Would someone tell me what "recessed" means. Do the K's have it?

Recessed means the cylinder is machined to fully support the head of the case and this was done on N Frame Magnums (Models 27, 28, 29, etc.) and K Frame Magnums (Models 13, 19, etc.) up until 1982 and all Rimfires. I don't have a good picture of this on a Magnum, but here's a Rimfire.

Here is a mag K frame (Mod 66 no-dash) showing the recessed cylinder.
