First time ordering a new pistol. S&W bodyguard. An already shot shell came with it. Just curious as to what it's for. Can anyone tell me?

In some states you are required to turn in a fired casing when registering your handgun.

The envelope has the date the gun was test fired. Even though the gun may have come off the assembly line days or maybe weeks before, this test fire date is widely accepted as the gun's "born-on" date.

The case inside has the impression of the firing pin, sort of like a ballistic fingerprint.

Yep, like said above, there are States who require a fired case when registering the handgun with them. I think NJ is one of them but I'm not sure, I live in the mostly free state of PA... The only reason I don't throw it away is, I don't throw away anything that came with the gun.

Mary Land is what the sticker said on my Kimber box. Does not include shell casing for MD. First thing I do is pitch that case just out of spite.

The idea was that the states could have a data base of the firing pin strike and who purchased the gun. If they found brass at a crime scene they could compare that brass to the stuff in the data base. A lot of money was spent some places and it has led to solving almost no crimes and has been discontinued in almost all states that implemented the data base. It seems that folks that go to the LGS, pass a background check and buy a gun tend to not commit crimes with those guns.
