I just bought this new 637-2 to run in place of my 442 while it's in for warranty. Granted, when I bought the 442 I never really verified it for cylinder gap or end shake. I've been really wanting a 637 airweight ever since I got the 442 so I figured now is a great time while the 442 is being made right. Naturally, I verified all function and condition of this new 637 before starting any paperwork. Gotta say... I think I like this one a lot more.

Fun fact

You can put the 642 hammer on your 637. MIM parts just fit. I’ve had my 637 like that for awhile and it goes boom every time so no issue with the different hammer.

There's pluses & minuses to the hammer J-frames.

Sorry your 442 was faulty.

What they say about inspecting a new S&W before buying is definitely real. The example they were showing me in the case had some slight end shake. I went ahead and said I want it as long as they had one new in the back stock that is in better order. They gladly did have this one in the backstock room and it passed with flying colors. I was able to finally check the cylinder gap when I got home and it's only .006" and end shake measured .000". The only fault I can find on this new 637, which is pretty impossible to avoid with these, is a slight blemish on the frame by the lower side plate screw. That did not concern my in the least bit as I don't think anyone is buying these airweights to baby them.

I like the 637-2. I've got three of them, all converted to 9mm.

I've done that: bought another gun to "replace" one while an original was in the shop. Great reason to buy a gun, especially a J. Always a soft spot for the 637. Carried one around the clock during a difficult period.

The 637 is a fantastic carry piece. Mine is set up exactly like yours. I have never been able to get accustom to the Centennial pattern revolvers. Old habit of my thumb being on the back of the hammer spur when drawing or holstering I guess. I have yet to have the spur catch on anything drawing from any position. I have considered purchasing an extra hammer and bobbing it, or installing a 642 hammer. The one I picked up several years ago is a well made specimen. Locks up tight, has perfect timing and has a .005 cylinder gap. I also shoots most standard pressure ammo to point o aim. Who ever assembled it at S&W was having a good day that day.
