I’m new to revolvers and just picked up a new 642-1 Performance Center model. I have a couple questions

1. The cylinder can rub on the frame when it is open. There is a little play in the cylinder from front to back and when it is “back” it rubs on the frame. Is this normal? See picture

2. This is a Performance Center model so it has been milled for moon clips. The back of the cylinder has several mill marks and other gouges. Is this normal?

Shoots good, feels good. Just not sure if this normal, poor workmanship, or just the way it is these days.

Thanks for the help!

I have this same gun. New, the cylinder was hard to open, and the ejector rod looked like it had been tightened with a pair of pliers. It went back to S&W and took a couple of months to be returned. After I got it back, I was dry firing it and the trigger would occasionally stick just before it would drop the hammer. Back to S&W, this time only for a couple of weeks. It's back and although it's supposed to have a PC action job, it feels rough and worse than standard triggers I've felt. My Ruger LCR puts this gun to shame in both workmanship and trigger. I have yet to shoot 642 and I'm not sure if I'll keep it. I know a lot of folks have had great luck with the new guns, but for me, won't be buying any new S&Ws and will stick with the pre-MIM/pre-lock oldies but goodies.

I got one too I found used, like new from a local shop. My trigger is slightly better than what I can do with a spring kit. And overall a good looking gun with a few PC upgrades.

The fore/aft play and the cylinder hitting when open is normal.

I can't tell what the arrow points to, but those chatter marks on the edge of the cylinder above the arrow isn't normal.

If the gun works well and you don't mind the marks, shoot and enjoy. Otherwise send it back to S&W.

I have since dumped the grips, as it's probably the smallest boot grip I've ever held. Just doesn't work with my large hands.
